Tim ,I always enjoy someone getting to add to their passion.You have an amazing collection. I have a couple of the stag Anglo Saxon whittlers.The one I like most has the ringed bolsters,like the one you posted.I think you dated these in a thread somewhere.

What's even nicer is when a friend gives you a nice one that you don't have ,as David Anthony did to me.Thanks again David,till.....

Does anyone have the link on how these knives are dated-I've got a R. Klaas two blade jack and my son has if I remember rite a pearl whittler--he's had the pearl knife since he was around 7 or 8 one of the first he ever bought

To my knowledge or lack of it, there is no link for dating Klaas knives.
The only ones that can be dated to the year are club knives, special runs and knives
made between 1972 and 1986 (Roman numeral stamp). Others can be guestimated
by arch stamp, straight stamp, KC prefix and the size of the birds on the stamp.
Older ones will include stamps from Prussia, Solingen, and Ohligs.

Hey guys,

I've just bought a knife off eBay that looks like a similar pattern to s-k's and basser5's postings.
The small blade is only stamped "SOLINGEN", and there's no stamping on the main blade.
It looks and feels like an older knife.
Any ideas if it was a Klass knife, or maybe the main blade has been replaced?
It seems original to me, but I'm no expert.
Thoughts and comments appreciated.

Keith... that is a fairly common pattern in Germany and made by a lot
of different makers. It's called a allemand pattern or vinyardmans knife.

All of my Klaas knives are stamped as such. I think it will be tough to
narrow down the maker. Sorry i can't help more.

I took a gamble on ebay a while back. Seller couldn't read the tang and the pictures or picture was so poor I could barely make out a knife. For 5 bucks I was pleased when I cleaned it up a bit. I have wanted to get a new Robert Klaas but have been afraid of getting stuck with a Chinese model. Does the "since 1834" still indicate a Chinese model and the rest are Germany models? Tim that is an impressive collection you showed in this thread, thanks for showing.

Your knife is a Crane brand by Klaas established 1913. Both birds facing forward with two legs each.

It is very rare to see an older one like yours......Congrats!

Yes it still holds true that China made knives are stamped "Since 1834"

These are some really nice knives. I have a post on the European and Other Foreign Manufactured Knives asking for info on the knife I have pics for. I have not found anything about any knives like the one I have. Can any of the Robert Klaas expert collectors give me any info. I was going to move my post here but wasn't sure how to do it. The knife has been put up since '97 until a few months ago when I started trying to get some info.
I also have a J. Moede that I am going to try to post on German Knife Forum, I think I can use Google translate to post some questions and put some pics on their forum. If it works I may put the pics of my Robert Klass KC on the site.

The results of a Google translation are often quite funny. Let me know if can help out with the translation, I am a native German speaker.

Thanks, I didn't have time last night. I did type a few lines on notepad and copied and pasted it on google translate. I gave me a german translation, but I don't know if it was correct. I have copied some text from a german forum and got a translation, but it was hard to understand some of it. Kind of mixed up. I will let you know what I find out.

Computers becoming more clever every day but a working translation program hasn´t been invented yet. I believe Japanese is one of the worst languages to translate with Google but German can be problematic too. Just drop me a line if I can be of help.

I filled in the registration and it had a random question to answer. It was in German, so I translated it and found the answer, but it said it was incorrect. After a few times I stopped and left the site. I may try again and make sure I read everything carefully. Thanks for the help.

I´ve just checked the Messerforum:

6. This one is difficult: random question. My question was for the German "blade city", so the answer would be "Solingen".

The last thing to do is to tick the box on the bottom of the site: "Unsere Regeln" This is the usual "I have understood the rules and regulations..."

If you are going to post on Messerforums, you might as well e-mail Klaas direct. They answer all the
Kissing Crane questions anyway.

Capt. Farrel, I didn't try again. We are getting ready to go on vacation so I have been busy. The random question I had was the first German chancellor (after 1949). I answered Konrad Adenhaur and it said that was incorrect. I will try after we get back next week.

Those guys over at the Messerforum seems to be a pretty intellectual bunch! You better know your history book joining them. . Never mind Alfred, enjoy your holidays! First German chancellor is correct but misspelled. It would have been "Konrad Adenauer".

Thanks, I checked my notes where I did the research and I spelled it right on paper but not when I typed it on the registration.
I e-mailed Robert Klaas and got a reply. They only said the knife was made for decades in their "classic line" but could not date it. Nothing was said about the use of 440c steel. I read where Buck used 440c starting in '81.
I will try to register again when I get back and check my spelling.
