All About Pocket Knives

You won't see the prongs on the bone handled knives as they can't be used with bone.
You will only see it on some plastic & celluloid handles.

That should save you from checking all of your knives!

Here are a couple old scout patterns with prong construction.
In the first one you can see the prongs were I broke off the "old 'shrinky dink' plastic" handle.
BTW, Jerry you should register the name "shrinky dink plastic" as it perfectly describes those old black handles! In this pic the handles have not shrunk as much but the prongs are barely visible above the inverted "V" marks in the pic. Double clik the pic to make it bigger. The pics were scanned at 1200 dpi so they get real BIG.

I read this thread,and the many others on AAPK about the 72 whittler. Then the good Colonel26 tells me I need one. Orvet points out a general history of them, and JerryD and I have a short convo on where to get a bone handled one. So what do I do? Well I go to the AAPK stores and Orvet has one, kijda like jerry's scout model seen earlier. So now, I've got a 72 on the way to try it out and see how I like 'em.

I misspoke a bit, the one Orvet had has a scout symbol on it a rounded shield I believe, and its white delrin handled. My thought is to try it out as a user, then get after a Rogers bone if I get sunk liking this thing, which will probably happen.

I already had a thing for GEC whittlers, now this whittler...my Congresses are going to wonder why they're not getting carried!

Yes. Kershaws I say. I just received a blue Scallion in the mail yesterday and now I have a mega Jones for the red, green and yellow Scallions. May God have mercy on my soul.


So you got the white Scout. Those seldom come up for sale so no matter what you think of the knife hang on to it. I can't imagine your not liking it but ya never know...

Can't say as I do, Chet. I have no explanation for that gap in my music memory. Of course these days, there are many gaps I have no explanation for.

I watched that Steppen Wolf video.
Afterward several other videos came up, so I clicked on the Iron Butterfly song -In Da A Godda Da Vida.

It came on in black & white, which was OK, I remember B&W, but what really made me feel OLD was an ad at the bottom of the video for AARP!

There ought to be a law against targeting ads to audiences by age!!!

As requested, here's my 72 whittler, courtsey of Orvet. Thanks sir! My overall impression of this knife, is its the perfect size. 3 5/8 inches, mine measures. Mine has delrin scales, which gives me a chance to test drive her some before I chase the elusive bone 72. I got her and wiped her down, oiled her on the joints and have been working her back and forth, the joints are a bit stiff, the walk and talk is deifinitely there. I understand the scout shield makes this one a little more desirable, instead of a camillus shield. Someone more knowledgeable than I, please confirm or deny that.

Anyways, I've not carried her yet, that's coming up, I've got a bunch of knives 'in waiting' for test drives, so I'll have to report back on that. I do love the swell center, its a nice touch in my hands, and fills out nicely. The blade selection is great, who doesn't love a sheepsfoot blad along with those clips? I never use a spey, so its a welcome change to have the smaller clip versus the spey (and another stockman ) I've got too many of those!

Ah, another question, I am seeing a long line under camillus on the tang stamp, that puts it as a later era knife, 1989 to close, is that right?

Without further ado, here she is:

Thomas -- Now that you're the proud new owner of a really spiffy Camillus Whittler Scout knife there are a couple of things you need to know about your knife.

1. First of all, it's not a #72, it's catalog number is BSA047 and the stock number is BSA 1047. Don't panic, those are just Camillus internal numbers for the same knife. It's still a Camillus whittler just like the #72, only with different Camillus designators. Same knife, different numbers.
2. That's not a 'sheepsfoot' blade. It's a 'coping' blade.
3. The Boy Scout version of the Carpenter's & Whittler's knife (Carpenter's dropped sometime between 1965 & 1972, thereafter to be referred to as just the Whittler) is not all that uncommon. Camillus made thousands of them from (according to one source) 1947-2007.
4. What's not very common is the white Delrin handles. The knives were only made with those handles from 1980-1984 (according to the same source). You just don't see them very often.
5. If you really want to hunt for a rare bird, I read they made a:
   1. CAMW3B, BSA #1047. This is identical to the CAMW3A, but with the addition of a removable bail on the end opposite the shield. Produced 1947-1969.
   2. CAMW3G, BSA #1047. Same as the CAMW3F, but with bail on end opposite shield. Made 1970-1979.

Congratulations. Enjoy your new knife. She's a rare beauty.

I swear that looked like a sheepsfoot to me, with the curve on the top of the blade, all the coping blades (Case knives) have a sharper angle to them on the downward turn of the top of the blade. Those are ones I have experience with.

Always something new to learn here.

I never noticed that before. The spine on the Camillus coping blades does "round" down. On the Schrade 863, it doesn't. Or at least one the 863 I have it doesn't (it's factory new).

You can tell it's a coping blade because it's so small. Compare it to a sheepsfoot blade and you'll see what I mean. Even the smallest sheepsfoot is much larger.

jerry is what year where the first Camillus 72 made and did they first have 72 on them .Grant

Grant -- From all the evidence I've been able to gather, the 72 first appeared in the 1946 catalog. I've never seen one with an earlier tang stamp so I'm going to say there's a strong possibility 1946 was the year the 72 premiered. The very early ones with bone handles did have 72 stamped on the back of the main blade tang.
