All About Pocket Knives

I have a knife that belonged to my dad. I wont let that one go.
It will go to my son or daughter when I'm gone.

My question is: What is your favorite folding knife pattern?

I’ll bite, but I’m not sure what the pattern actually is. This would be what my first knife looked like, and it’s still ‘what a knife looks like’.
Main blade - clip point
Second blade - sheepsfoot
Third blade - very small pen

It’s even better on dark brown jigged bone with a brass shield and ‘premium stock’ on it. Oh, serpentine and about 2 1/4” - 3”.
I haven’t read the whole thread, so it may have been asked, but my question is who have you passed the knife collecting bug onto? Kids? Grandkids? Friends?

I passed it onto my Sons.

My question: For those who try to limit themselves to one knife a month, How far ahead of yourself are you? I imposed this limit at New Years I’m up to next August.

At least 4 years ahead of the 1 a month plan.

Do you edc 2 knives, 1 of them to show off and 1 to actually use?

When I carry two knives it's usually so one can be either a beater or one to have nice fresh edges (because I'm ocd about edges). When off work sometimes I carry one to "show off".

Has anybody ever broken a blade, sharpened it out, and continued to use the knife?

I jammed the tip of my old kershaw into the garage floor when I was workin on a deer. Sharpened it out, good as new, sorta.


some guys like new knives, some old but mint condition knives, others (like me) like some wear and pocket polish on them. Which do you like and why?

I see it only took 7 years to get my question answered, LOL

Anyway, to your question , I would say both! If it's a knife I am going to carry, wear is fine. If it is for the collection, I'd like it to be as mint as possible.


Okay, my question: Which knife pattern can you just not "get in to"? You kinda just hate it, and wouldn't buy one even if it was a good deal?

Barlow.....I just can't make myself enjoy them. I've seen some with great handles but they are still a Barlow.

My question. What knife do you want so bad you can taste it but you can't make yourself pay the high dollar asking price they bring.

Tony Bose cattle knife - want one so bad it hurts but I’ll never pay what they go for.

Q: does anyone have any practical experience with Case modern SS vs CV steel in terms of edge holding or sharpness standpoint ? Seems many just prefer CV for the basic fact it’s not stainless - i’d Like to know if anybody has actual experience with both and can shed their findings (not just the usual I don’t like stainless (for whatever reason), so CV must be better ...)

Mora makes a great knife at a really cheap price point. I don't usually carry a fixed blade though, so I would say shell handle Imperials. Great steel at a bargain price!

I lost my Buck 119 when I was about 14, I searched for years but assumed it was gone or stolen. When I was 40, I found it in my parents utility room. What's the longest you've lost, then found a knife?

I lost an Old Timer 34OT during a November back in the early 80's. I had relieved Bambi of his internal organs prior to dragging him to the woods road and during this time I lost the knife. Next season after the property had been logged, I found the 34OT on a skidder trail, Delrin handles bleached by the sun and slightly rusted up.

My question to the next participant is: What caused the surge of the tactical folder? They are everywhere from the cheap to the steep!

My best answer to your question would of coarse be someone else's hard work and homework paper on this Subject - this is a pretty good article that may help with your question - and for the prices how they have landed in the range of thousands of dollars is and always have been because someone, somewhere, was willing to pay the price to own it.....a handmade knife is different it has sound reasoning for their asking prices i.e. what it took to make the knife and it being something unique and for most buyers a one of a kind piece nobody else will ever have which in it self is something special, then you have CNC Knives being mass produced with the push of a button on some expensive equipment and a few folks assembling them is all that is needed - People have always been Prone to Pay a good deal for the Cool Factor no matter what the item may be.
