Colonel, I think "The Quiet Man" is probably my favorite John Wayne movie, and in my "Top 10" list.

Great movies guys and by the way, Second Hand Lions was filmed in this locality, not very far from my house. The fight scene was filmed at Cele Store in the Cele (pronounced seal) community, almost right around the corner.

Plus 1 on The Quiet Man! If I had to pick just one John Wayne movie as a favorite that would be it. Didn't mention it here cuz not a Western. The supporting cast included Maureen O'hara, Victor McLaglen, Ward Bond, and Barry Fitsgerald, all great actors themselves. The Duke and Maureen O'hara were great on screen together (McLintock, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon).

You're right Ken. I love the Duke of course. But I think he was at his best with that cast and John Ford directing.

I saw an interview once with John Wayne's children and they said that Maureen O'Hara was the only one who could match their dad on screen line for line, punch for punch. They were good together.

She was his co-star in both! Both are great movies.

You're cruzin today Tommy. You are spot on correct about The Duke / Maureen O'Hara movies, both the number and the titles.

I had never seen "The Quiet Man" until just recently when I found it in it's entirety on YouTube. It didn't light my fire. I found it dated and contrived. I ended up fast forwarding and only spot watching the last half.

Now McLintock.... "Yo Macklin." I liked that one, plus True Grit, The Cowboys, The Shootist and Donovan's Reef.

I know it's not a western (although it did take place in Texas), but it's been mentioned several times in the thread. I've watched "Second Hand Lions lots of times and with all my grandchildren except one. Love it. Love it. Love it.

.........that is a great movie, jerry, I really like it!!!....hope I'm not hi-jacking the "western" part of this thread, but my all-time favorite movie is "how green was my valley",directed by john ford,others I really like are "twelve o'clock high" and "to kill a mockingbird"............... ....................

I like just about everything mentioned in this thread, whether they took place in the western United States, western Alabama, western Ireland or Australia.

No offense, but I don't consider comedic movies as "Westerns", Westerns.

Blazing Saddles was funny, but Mel Brooks just went too far with it.

I liked the Support Your Local Sheriff movies, but I prefer serious Westerns.

There are still some good Westerns being made. Robert Duvall has done some, Open Range was great, as is one of his latest, Broken Trail. I haven't seen Wild Horses or A Night in Old Mexico, but I suspect they are good, 'cause he's in them.

Although not a Western, you should all see him in Get Low.

John Wayne's The Searchers is probably the best Western ever made.

Shane is another favorite of mine.

The Outlaw Josey Wales is a fabulous movie, Eastwood's Best, in my opinion.

Unforgiven is dark, but a great movie.

Quigley Down Under and all the Sackett movies are good.

I even liked Cowboys and Aliens.

Well Google is your friend but that's close enough for my house. That's about the way I remember it too.

My favorite line from any movie ever made was spoken in Road House. It was the restaurant scene when Sam Elliott said to Patrick Swayze about Kelly Lynch; "That woman is entirely too smart to have an ass like that." That may not be a direct quote but it's awfully close.

Sam Elliott is one of my favorite actors and shines in just about everything he does. I have to admit, I have a man crush on him and would.... Law enforcement might be monitoring this thread so I can't say what I would do to be as handsome and sexy as he is and to have that voice but it would be extreme.

By the way, if you get the opportunity to watch a Kelly Lynch movie from 1989 called "Warm Summer Rain", don't miss it. The movie's not all that great but Kelly Lynch is/was fine, fine, fine.

But Blazing Saddles and Support Your Local are just flat HILARIOUS!

I have read through the Lonesome Dove book series two or three times. Most of Gus and Cap'n Calls adventures are fictionalized accounts of actual events in Texas history. I rank them among the best books I have ever read as well.

I like a lot of westerns mentioned,but none has the amount of quotable lines ,to me , as Lonesome Dove( won the Pulitzer Prize for literature).

The book is where I started. Just could not get into it.

Try reading Gone to Texas (coupled with The Outlaw Josey Wales) - my copy had both books under one cover - great read - the movie was really based on Gone To Texas, but used the title from the second book to name the movie. OH

The author , Forrest Carter, supposedly was a speech writer for George Wallace. He taught some classes at Hardin Simmons, I believe it was, which is a Baptist University in my home town of Abilene, Texas.
He also wrote a great little book, The Education of Little Tree. It is a very quick read and well worth the time. Interestingly, the name of the family in this book is also named Wales. It was made into a movie but it didn't seem to get much traction.
It was nominated for Oprah's Book Club or whatever she calls it but she turned thumbs down on it quickly, presumably because of the George Wallace connection.
