Your shot.......I mean.......Your turn

I was out doing my first deep diving of the year, near the small town of Mendocino when I was attacked by this pair of fierce Buck Stag-alone, a very distant throw back to the modern abalone. I managed to capture three, a doe and two bucks! This Stag-alone (Haliotis Cervus unicolor temperamentalus) is a mighty fierce beast. After wrestling with them until I was almost out of breath I managed to shoot to the surface. The 2 males fought like crazy, we were tangled in the Bull Kelp, you can see the Bull Kelp fronds still stuck on these ornery critters. The doe was quite docile compared to the bucks, maybe it's rutting season for the critters. These boys were just downright mean, I'll have to turn them into knife handles to get even. Like I said, these bucks fought like demons, maybe their rasping tongues has nuero-toxins, every part of my body is wracked with pain, so sore, so tired. Inspector, inspector where are you? HELP! WAIT, I think I hear them coming.

That is in complete reverence for your displayed bravery for swimming with such ferocious comestibles.

Heres a new sport you might want to try. Under right conditions they actually get airborne for several yards. At Hood River Or.

I enjoy watching the kite surfers, my wife and I enjoyed watching them in Maui. I am much more comfortable swimming with sharks than I am airborn. To tell the truth, I do my best work in low places. I tried to windsurf for about 6 months, the last time I did, I fell in a manner where I ended up straddling the mast (major ouch). When I was an indestructable teenager, I used to go up to Lake Berryessa (Napa Co. CA) with a couple friends to jump off the Putah Creek bridge. I figured this would cure my fear of heights, but no such luck. With the aid of peer pressure, I jumped off this bridge that is about 75 to 100 ft off the water. We all survived through the ignorance of youth but I still to this day would rather have both feet planted firmly on the ground or in the water. Yep, I still don't like those heights, doesn't take a lot. . I'd rather be 75 feet under the water than over it. I'd rather fight the horrific Stag-alone than to be airborn. Better yet, I would like to be fishing for salmon, but I have a frezer full, I have to wait.

Is that last picture of the salmon what you see when the airborne sport does not work out ???

But I'm pretty sure those huge racked relatives (Stag-alones) of the elusive, reputed to be land-dwelling, SandBar Stag, will cause long lasting hallucinations , (as well as the bends...for most of us), if consumed.

But, I've been wrong on occasion.

I do enjoy fishing for Salmon that's for sure. Red abalone is the largest in the world and I have taken numerous abalone that are trophy size (over 10 inches). Those look to be about 8 1/2 inches. When I get up to Gualala, I usually get some big ones. The limit used to be 4 abalone and I can remeber that my limit would fill a 5 gallon bucket. I can remember this abalone my wife is holding, it had 5 lbs of meat in it, it was so large that the unsliced meat barely fit in a 1 gallon freezer bag (squeeze fit). Taste, no not like chicken, abalone is rich, can't eat much and is expensive if you were to buy it.

Advantage of free diving, you can't get the bends. Only when scuba diving is that a concern. I'm still and pretty darn sore I wonder what Stag-alone taste like, venison/scallop? fishy beef

Good morning 9 ball Glad to see that you survived the meteor shower. I think your mutation comment adds a critical dimension to the storyline. That and the 'Cancer Man' got me thinking that the Sandbar Stag has evolved the capability to mutate at will into more common forms. Thus, while it lives among us, it has manged to avoid detection all of these years . I like your new avatar . Did you design that one yourself? Have a great day. s-k

Not verbatim to my original but. Fantastic thought, the SS exists in a shadow world. You really need to pen a treatise on this subject, it will create an entire new object to mandibulate on. Dont tarry, pounce while its fresh in your mind. Remember there are no limits on exaggeration.

Got to chewing my cud over parallel universes and I finally realized you didn't mean that.

You are alluding to this creature being a shape shifter I now believe and that certainly fits with all the varying theories as to his true appearance.
I think you need to pursue this til it can be nailed down. You may need to request assistance from the yard on this matter.

My hypothesis is that the Sandbar stag evolved shape shifting capabilities. This provides them with the potential to appear in their original Sandbar stag form when desirable (e.g., attracting a mate, family reunions, taking time to relax at home on the sandbar etc). However, much of the time they assume less conspicuous forms to avoid attention from knifemakers and Sandbar stag bounty hunters. A very lucrative and specialized profession.

I now have reason to believe, in true X-file fashion, that this was far from a natural evolution. Back in the 1950s, as part of the coldwar arms race, both the US and Soviets were developing shape shifting technology. The Americans had the clear advantage as a result of genetic material recovered from Roswell and other alien crash sites. Allegedly, a number of experiments were conducted on various animals in top secret labs around the country (e.g., PA, OR, TN, FL) with the ultimate goal of creating a super weapon. The trials on smaller animals (mice, rabbits etc) were highly promising. The test on the Sandbar stag was to be the final step before ultimate deployment. Unfortunately, a rogue faction of an extreme animal rights organization learned of the trials. Through a series of well orchestrated simultaneous raids these Stag freedom fighters were able to penetrate the secure facilities and release all of the stags. However, they did not forsee the potential consequences of their actions. Given the success of the shape shifting programme, and the Sandbars propensity to procreate, the genetic mutation rapidly spread throughout the entire Sandbar population. They were relatively rare to begin with so it was not long before the entire species developed the shape shifting capabilities.

As mentioned above, there are rare time when it suits them to take on their original form. Thus, on a moonlit night or in the deep of the forest, one may catch a rare glimpse of the ellusive creature. However, be extremely cautious. While the government denies any such project ever existed, to this day it has a small team dedicated to exterminating both the species and anyone who possess this knowledge. They are sure to be in the vicinity of any sighting. Back in a minute there are two big men dressed in cheap black suits and sunglasses knocking on my door.....



Or, now that you mention it mossdancer, I suppose, it could be a parallel universe scenario. I may have to rethink my hypothesis.

Very nice hypothesis, makes sense in all ways. Enclosed is I believe the first SS1a fixed blade known to humananity. As you can see evolution has allowed shape shifting even after the death and use of the creature for his born purpose.. This blade holds an edge that will cut most soft objects.
