Honing Steel and Cleaver

Today at the NSBC meeting I picked up two Ulster Knife Co.(circa 1860's to 1930's) whittlers in really nice condition. The blades look nearly full, snap is near perfect and the handles are like new. The white one, smooth bone I think (not celluloid) has a nice grain to it that resembles ivory. I really like the long pull and long swedges on the blades.____Dave

It's always good to see what folks acquire on any given day, all of them are great! But I must say Scott has found a fine couple of tools this time! If I didn't already have a "real" cleaver, I would be trying to make a deal on that cleaver and steel! A cleaver is not used too often any more but once in a while they are what is needed. Scott, that looks like a fine one! Some one will be pleased.

Kissing Crane Congress made in Germany with Stag Scales I was told are Green Bone. Four blades all marked with two Cranes and reverse of one blade says Germany. Bar shield riveted on.Thank you for any information.

Very nice ulsters. It's possible the bottom knife is ivory, ulster did use it some and that's how it looks from here. How frequently they used ivory I do not know.

Scott, I like your friend already. I stopped at my favorite junk shop the other day and got these two. The Case XX is a 6265SAB and needs someone like me that takes in poor old soldiers that really need someone who doesn't care about ugly and the amount of time it will take to bring it back to a presentable state. I'm not sure what all I will do to it, but it has good blades and good snap so I want to do something to the bone to make it a little more attractive. The grey puddy has to go. The Puukko is in pretty good shape under the dirt and corrosion. ___Dave

The grain really does look like ivory and I thought Ulster did use some but I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell the difference. The one side doesn't show much grain and looks like plain old smooth bone with no character but the other side really does look more like the few ivory knives I do have. I can't see any of the telltale pores that suppose to indicate bone. Thanks Paul. ____Dave
