All About Pocket Knives

A little brasso and that sweet Schrade LB is gonna look outstanding.

They're not making 'em any more here in the States so you're smart to pick 'em up while they're still around.

Probably shouldn't have done it but got 6 steel warrior knives, one crowing rooster (all from China) and a Lansky 8" coarse/fine stone for $80. The crowing rooster is a big 4.5" stockman.
One of the warriors is a 4" stockman, another 3.5". Three identical split backspring whittled.
And a 3" toothpick. Will probably carry the 3.5 stockman or the whittlers
maybe even the toothpick.

Ulster Knife Co. knives (1941 or older) from North Star Blade Collectors meeting. All 5 are in good working order, mostly full blades (the horn candle end's pen blade is sharpened down some) and very nice handles scales. It was well worth the several hour drive down. Can't wait until next month. ____Dave

Dave, I'm absolutely infatuated with the swell-end and the whittler at the top of the pic. You had a heck of a day at the show!

Yeah, it's in the twin cities and I come home every month with a similar haul for very good prices. One of our members bought out a few collections, one of which was a good sized Ulster collection, and is selling them off to get his money back fairly quickly. There is plenty for me to share and I left a lot of really good knives for any of you who would wander in. We'd love to have more attending. I paid $150 for the whole lot yesterday. We meet every third Saturday.____Dave

Found at an Antique shop yesterday; a rare Damascus Cutlery swell end fat jack (circa 1890) made for Baker and Hamilton of Calif. for a whopping 5 bucks. Levine says they were made by either Eclipse or New Haven Cut. It has a lot of miles but still has snap and a fair amount of blade left. The other was a Buck 705A that was tipped on the main blade but was also cheap so I picked it up. ____Dave

Antique shop finds this week. The Damascus Cut. I posted earlier, a H.sears and a case I picked up today. The sears doesn't appear to have ever been used or sharpened but has some light pitting from being stored somewhere it shouldn't have been. Otherwise it's perfect. ___Dave

Went to the flea market in Cleveland that has been pretty good to me.
Found from top to bottom.
Case XX small stockman with a tipped Wharncliffe
Kabar small stockman with a tipped main
unknown pen (until I get to my loupe)
Northrup Kung jack only says USA on the tang
Camillus equal end stockman with a badly tipped pen or spey blade

All Carbon steel except the Jack which I'm sure is SS.
Gave $43 for all 5.

Most of the nail Nick is gone on the Camillus so I don't know that I can fix it. The Case will fix ok and the Kabar will have a short but usable main.

But to me the Case is the crown jewel of the find.

Further information.
The Camillus equal end is a 75.
The pen knife is also Camillus and has a blade and a fingernail tool.
None of these are shell handle.
The Camillus 75 needed the pivot tightened up.
The little Kabar now has two straight edge blades.
The Case XX small stockman is all ready to go in my watch pocket.
Might take dynamite to blast it out.
Always wanted a Case small stockman. XX makes it special!

Dave the camillus 75 is a nice little jr cattle pattern. I'd like to have a few more of them.

Mineral oil cleaned the Case enough to see 10 dots making it a 1970 if I'm not mistaken.
The Camillus pen knife has a floppy main blade. If I squeeze it it has a lot less movement.
I see no way to fix it. Maybe somebody can?

Find a piece of leather that will wrap around the bolsters, then gently squeeze the bolsters in a vice, (or even in the jaws of vice grips if you don't have a vice). The leather protects the bolsters, but the squeeze action will pinch the bolsters into the blade tightening it up. In extreme cases you can peen the pin over but you would need to re-finish the bolsters if you tried that. Pinching the bolsters like that doesn't work on US-made Schrades, as they attached their blades using the Swindon Key method, Camillus however pinned the blades through the bolsters so squeezing them together sometimes helps. Do it gently but give it a try, it has worked for me most times I've tried it.

On most knives I agree 100%. But this Camillus is very slim and has tip bolsters.
There is no pin end that I can see.
