The powers that be, may be in Glasgow discussing carbon neutrality, but here in Illinois they have been moving a heckuva lot of coal. Yesterday, I posted pics of Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, and Kansas City Southern locomotives hauling coal. Today, this BNSF train absolutely blew by me at a crossing. I don't think I have seen a loaded coal train moving as fast as was this one.

They have to keep the juice on so people can charge their iPhones and iPads.
CSX moves a lot of coal too.

Almost got a picture just now of AMTRAK. Too much growth around the tracks and he didn't stop to pose.

I had the same type experience recently, John, it was gone before I could activate the camera app on my phone. I don't know how fast they travel around Alexandria, but the City of New Orleans sure doesn't waste any time blowin' through the Illinois countryside.

Did you ever have occasion to see the Newcastle Flyer? It operated in NSW (region where you live, right?) But ceased operation in 1988 so maybe that isn't within your timeframe. Anyway, I was looking at some Australian trains (online) and thought it to be an impressive loco.

This is an advertising board for our equivalent, the Spirit Of Progress, one of the most modern steam loco's of it's time.

Would any of you have a favorite train movie. Mine is the 1985 Runaway Train starring John Voight. Although containing plenty of action it operates on an unusually deep psychological level. The final scene is unexpected and quite remarkable.

I saw Runaway Train a couple months ago and yes Psyce plays a part.

Garry, I have never seen Runaway Train, I suppose it shoukd go on my bucket list with your recommendation.
My favorites are all older b/w movies, including the Buster Keaton movie that you mentioned. Incidentally, I went to see The General locomotive on display in Kennesaw, Georgia. My list would include The General, The Train, Night Train to Munich, The Lady Vanishes, and Von Ryan's Express.

I missed Night Train to Munich. But the others are all good. What is commendable about Runaway Train is that it accomplishes something most movies can't do. The final scene compels one to think about some serious elements of life.

Unstoppable was probably the last train movie I saw, or maybe 3:10 to Yuma. Both were ok, watched them on HBO so no high dollar theater money lost there.


Another classic, Murder on the Orient Express. I did like Snowpiercer, a sci-fi that I found interesting.

The start of a new era over here, it was the standardisation of the main line between Sydney and Melbourne.
