On other knives Case has applied a jigging pattern and dyed bone to make the bone look like their modern jigged and dyed second slice off an antler. Even though it might be the first cut off the bone they call the jigging and dye Second Cut. The pattern number will start with SC6. Clear as mud?

Thanks for the explanation. I must admit I never knew why some second cut bone had "SC" in the pattern number and some didn't.

These next two are "Big" Mini Trappers; measuring approx 3 7/8" each instead of the standard 3½" (I say "approximately" because on my primitive plastic ruler it looks closer to 3 13/16" and OCD Monkey usually insists on precise data, especially when numbers are involved ) Interestingly, neither of these two has half-stops.

This Carl Schlieper Eye Brand has "3 Eyes" as well as some very nice stag on both mark & pile sides. I love this knife; it's a true piece of cutlery art IMHO. I believe this New York Knife Co. Walden was made by Schrade...not 100% sure, but I recall reading something (right here on AAPK) about Schrade owning the trademark. I'm not very familiar with Schrade knives as I've only ever owned a few. But, from my limited experience I would say that this knife definitely has the "feel" of a Schrade made knife.

No more guessing about the closed length of a knife.

Rounding to 1/8" appears to be customary on knife forums but in notes I make for myself I round to 1/16". Just to measure pocket knife handles I paid $1 for an old plastic RCBS 4" vernier caliper that is graduated in 1/64". I saves converting the measurement from good calipers to fractions. I wish it was a 6" caliper.

That stag Carl Schlieper is a beautiful knife. I'll go out on a limb and argue that adding a shield tends to result in poorer stag. Your Carl Schlieper and Walden illustrate the point. The peaks of the bark were sanded off to make it easier to install the shield on the Walden. I'd rather have gnarlier stag and no shield. Some knives have shields set deep into gnarly stag but they're less common.

Mini T Monkey will crucify me for putting a Barlow in the Mini Trapper thread; but, just to illustrate the point that sometimes you can have both gnarly stag and a shield... It certainly helps to have a small shield that can fit down inside between the gnarls and even then you might have to custom carve a gnarl or to.

My response to that monkey would get me kicked off AAPK.

I saw an 07 in an antique store yesterday. It was a tested era knife with a clip and a pen. Blades were mostly full and were grayish with patina. Handle scales were rough black. It looked a lot like the one shown on page one of this post. The guy was asking $60 which I thought was a great price. It had no wobble on either blade and still had some pretty good snap. Maybe I should go back tomorrow?

I would and see if he would take 45.

I have my own monkey. He's of the pigmy species and a little more tame but a monkey just the same.

Now that I've shown my Big Mini Stags, it seems only appropriate to show a few Stag Mini Trappers on the other end of the size spectrum. They might even be considered Pygmy Minis...which may appeal to certain of the aforementioned Mini T Monkey species.
Measuring in at 3 3/8" (3 5/16" by OCD Monkey reckoning) are these three Queens (which, unlike the renown Three Kings of Christmas lore, definitely "of Orient" are not!):

First up is the companion to one I showed earlier, DFC era Schatt & Morgan 1095 Carbon 1 0f 50, except unlike its unadorned, no-shield twin this one sports the traditional S&M keystone shield. It also has much fatter stag handles. Speaking of fat stag Queens...although, I wouldn't recommend calling this one "fat" (at least not to its face) because you wouldn't want to offend it. And, like the bear trap blade etch suggests, it does indeed have a Bear Trap Snap that could easily take off a carelessly misplaced finger and still sound like a firecracker as it closed. I would venture to say that this is probably the hardest closing knife in my entire collection. Love that sound!

Batting cleanup in today's lineup is another shorty & fatty stag mini: a made-in-USA Battle-Axe Brand.
Notice that all three of these short minis have identical Spay blades but the master Clip blade on the Schatt & Morgan has a slightly different profile from the other two. Also, the Spay blade on the Queen Bear Trap has a pile-side nail nick.

Christmas Eve is as good a time as ever to do some last minute wrapping; so, I think I'll just go ahead and wrap up my little stag show extravaganza with these final few from my Stag Mini Trapper pile. I have to confess. I give her "suggestions" and she buy's 'em.

I have a patriotic display set. In fact a couple of them in the Mini-T pattern. Along with another with a flag motif, this is just icing on the cake.

A lesson to us all: Never underestimate the power of suggestion (or the sapidity of icing on the cake!)
