John, that is a conversation piece and a half. Very interesting knife. Has a lot of Sheffield written all over it in my opinion. Very cool.

Jay, agree it does have a Sheffield look to it, I'm thinking this is a fairly early Empire, the way the pulls go all the way through the tangs is one clue. I sure wish it had not been cleaned as I think some of the detail in the long pulls was lost in the cleaning.

Had the chance to participate in an online auction with over 250 knives. As usual the Case and other top name brand knives went for top dollar. Towards the end of the auction, I picked up this gem for less than the price a 1980's 3254 sold for. I've dug on this just a bit and see another like it is shown on Worthopedia. Then there are other, newer, Western Electric knives that are stamped property of Western Electric on the handles. I suspect this is a knife not issued to the general public, but was a specialty tool used in the manufacture of telephones, switchboards, etc. I also thought it might have come from the Indianapolis Western Electric factory, but production didn't start there until about 1950, so that is unlikely. Fully functional and kind of a pig in a poke. The auction had one picture of the front of the knife with the blade closed. I guess that worked out great for me.

I am very fond of the colors in the bone. I often wonder, when looking at bone handles that are maybe a little different look than the usual, if the look was intentional.....or did it just turn out that way?

Have not found many nice Empires over the years but did land a nice one the other day. 3 5/8" largish jack, pretty full blades, pattern number with the letter S on pile side tang. Etched R S Patrick Duluth Minn, from what little I can find R S Patrick was a mining equipment company and had a patent for diamond drill bits.
