This may be a reach but how about Civilian Conservation Corps that was operating from 33 until 42. That would put the stamp close. Mike

Hey, that is a good thought! Thanks!

I am going to do some more research on that. It makes sense as the Forestry Service Stamped their axes.

Also, once I clean it up the marking should be easier to read.

Here are my finds over the weekend at the local flea-market. A Swiss Army Knife, a Vaughan roofing hatchet and a Collins Hudson Bay axe. I thought the Collins was a Norlund at first (l love the Norlunds!), but I am just as happy to get what I did.

I'll be replacing the handle on the Collins Hudson Bay axe of course...

Yeah that Collins could pass for a Norlund. I wonder if there was some design borrowing? Some nice looking posts here lately!

Yes, I believe it is a Forest Service marking.

I agree that the CCC is the Conservation Corps. My Dad had several CCC stamped tools that his dad got during the depression, that got stolen when I was a kid. I remember one was a big heavy coal shovel. he said he would use it like a sled when he was a kid, so that's what we did with it. That was late 50's early 60's. It had no real value, but he was mad because it was a family heirloom, and a part of American History.

Thanks for all the input on the CCC interpretation. I am going to do some research on and see if I can match the markings with that on some other tools ...

if I can find some photos of other CCC stamped tools.

Here are a couple of Red Seals, a Collins brand. I have not seen very many of these around.

I think these are are bit older than more modern carpentry type hatches, I don't find them very often, but if I like to add them to the collection if the price is reasonable.

My buddy bought an inexpensive "Chi-com" hatchet,

This is how it held up to a little use.....

I like that Council. I could use one of those. I've passed on a couple OK doubles lately, but they didn't have any name. I'm kind of looking for a Plumb Cruiser, Collins Legitimus, or another American Beauty would be nice. I have a friend in England that was drooling over all the Jerseys posted on our forum. In MD, Jersey's are pretty common. I found just a head at an old farm auction and got it for $2. I did a little sneaking around and got his address from one of the guys in Nova Scotia. His reaction on the forum, the day it showed up on his front porch, was well worth the shipping. Well, a year or two went buy and I was working on a project in my garage. I went in for lunch, and when I came out, there was a box in the middle of my garage. He sent me two Kent Pattern heads. I posted pics a couple pages back. Before he ever mentioned the Jersey, he was lusting after an American double. He said they are very hard to come by in England. I figure he's one up on me now, and we can't have that. So, the search is on.

I think that is what he was doing, he splits a lot of wood, no heating in house, just a "Ben Franklin" stove/ wood burning stove.

Here is a "double shot" of American doubles; My Craftsman and my Plumb. I have a Collins double as well, tucked away somewhere and a True Temper Kelly Perfect Double Bit as well....that being said my favorite might just be my Hulst Bruks

Collins and Norlund were made by the same company, Mann Edge Tool in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. Same axe just stamped Collins.

I just took a quick look at Yesteryears Tools review of The Collins name and it looks like they started up shop in about 1826. They were in South Canton Connecticut from 1826 to 1828, moved to Collinsville Connecticut in 1828 and stayed there till bought out by Mann in 1966. I remember reading before that they came out with the Legitimus Trade mark about 1912 because they never trade marked their name and many other dead beat companies were using the name. I have a Collins Double that my Dad bought new in the 50's and never used it. It's beautiful on one side, but kind of faded on the other where I left it leaning against a shed many years ago. You can still read "Collins Genuine Hickory" printed on the handle. Thank goodness that's not the side that got left facing the sun.

Here is a Collins & Co axe with the Crown, Arm and Hammer design. Made in Collinsville, Connecticut. I have been cleaning this one and I will put a handle on it after being sharpened. If anyone can help with a manufacture date (pre 1966 as it was made in Conn) Let me know.
