Thanks, I have three of them right now, 2 different head sizes and all different handles. I think I had about 7 at one time, but I traded a few off. That being said they are really a great size to work with.

Here is a True Temper I am restoring. It is marked "SMU" on both sides. I am not sure what the marking refers to, maybe the former owner's initials?

I have been working my way through all the posts. I have accumulated some axes and hatchets over the years and now I am motivated to dig some of them out. Let’s start with this one. Would love to find a handle that fit.

Well, I think I may have picked up a couple more axes, but nothing special. My cousin called a few days ago and said he found an old Plumb ax display, did I want it. Of Course, so he dropped it off this morning.

VERY NICE! i HAVE ABOUT 25 VAROIUS PLUMB AXES AND HATCHETS. I LOVE THEM!

My cousin just called again, we talk almost every day, and he said he found another rack, just like the other one, but no advertising plate. With computers and graphic programs, I might try and find an old Collins logo and make a decal or transfer for it.

My hewing axe head cleaned up and with a handle...so now time to do some hewing....

Here is the Maker's mark on the hewing axe, I can't make it out, looks a little like it could be the "Plumb" mark as there is a "box" stamped around "Plumb" on a lot of my Plumb axes. Any ideas out there?

I'd say Plumb, Joe.

Here are three I recently picked up. The Plumb hatchet is pittied on the mark side but clean on the back, doesn't look like it ever got much use. All with original handles and the Collins axe has a Red Label sticker still partially intact. Not my area of expertise so any information and comments welcome.

Very nice set that you have acquired I have one of the Plumb National hatchets. It is one of my favorite hatchets. I am also a sucker for the hewing hatchets and axes.

Thanks for the reply. I picked the three up in a local auction along with a bunch of other tools. 2 man crosscut saws, frame saws, a Collins machete etc. All of them were in pretty good condition and looked as if they had been in storage for some time. I was most interested in the 3 shown and was happy to get them.

I love old tools! I also love hunting for them. I have a couple of 2 man crosscut saws that I just put in my garage to restore, they were in my front yard for decoration and have been beaten up in the weather so I hope they will look better when I am done.

Also, I was trying to clean up a Collins machete today. I had put it in vinegar to remove the rust then I coated with vegetable oil to prevent rust returning. I wrapped in plastic and put it away and when I pulled it out it was a mess. I have used bacon grease in the past with good results. I had some vegetable oil sitting on the counter and I tried that. However, the vegetable oil turns out to be a bad choice as it turns VERY sticky and hard to remove.
After a few weeks the oil gets very gummy and is a pain in the ass to get off (especially in cooler weather).

"Vintage" True Temper Flint Edge Kelly Works Pulaski Axe Head- Forest Service markings. I am always looking for True Temper Flint Edge Kelly Works and Kelly Perfect Axe Heads to add to my collection. I like getting rusty ones that look worn out and used up and then bring them back "to life" so to speak. This one was pretty rough and took a bit of work to clean it up. Next step will be a sharper edge and and a sturdy handle.

Great pieces! Anybody know anything about a roofer's hatchet like this. My grandfather's who died in 1956. Holds a really sharp edge.

I have some old hammers that are stamped "HAND MADE" only, with no name or location. I have not been able to find out much about them, so sorry I can't be of much help. That being said, that is very cool marking to have on your axe Thanks for the post!

I helped a buddy clean up his yard today and he gave this Collins Legitimus axe head as a "thanks". I am not sure about the markings on the back, 000 and a D? maybe? At first I thought it was "CCC". Any thoughts? I am sure it is a pre 1955 piece and I am trying to pin down a more exact manufacture date. The stamp looks similar to one shown in an advertisement from 1936. If anyone out there has an idea please let me know.

Next step is to clean of the dirt, then get the rust off, then put an sharp edge on it.
