All About Pocket Knives

Thanks for taking a look at my knives, it has been fun.

One more old and obscure. Wilbert Moose. I understand they were made by Napanoch and sold in the Sears and Roebuck catalog. I have seen a reprint of a 1908 Sears catalog and this knife is in there listed as the "Gladiator" and could be ordered for 74 cents plus 5 cents shipping!! This is the only Wilbert I have and the only one I have ever seen. Any more out there??

Challenge also made some Wilberts and probably others did also.

Wow ! Fantastic old Moose ! And Wilbert is a very collectible brand. Yes there are more Wilbert knives out there but almost all have been heavily used. It is rare to see one in as good condition as your moose. I think "Wilbert" was a branding exclusive to Sears and people who ordered from them were working people who bought tools to use.

Thanks for the replies on the Wilbert Moose and thanks espn77 for the catalog pages. I see it on the first page and the order # is 6K16997 for 74 cents. I am going to order a couple more!! You guys are posting great pictures of brands of knives I don't have (YET)!

Another rather obscure brand I have is this Enderes camper/scout knife. Enderes was a tool company in Albert Lea Minnesota in the early 20th century, which is probably what this one is. Note that the square that contains the name has a small bar on the far left that makes up the capital E in Enderes.

Here's an old Curtin & Clark. St. Joseph, Mo. 3 1/2". 1898-1909.

Another one I recently picked up that may be considered an Old and Obscure brand. This one is tang stamped "Sterling Service USA" on both of the blades and the pliers has a marking "PATAPLDFOR" which I assume is "patent applied for. The unit seems to be well made as the plier meshes together tightly. Have not found anything in any of my books. The handles are aluminum, but may not be original. In the photo with the tang stamp, you can see the letters "LT" which are raised above the aluminum surface of the handles. It is 3 5/8" closed length.

OC, nice knife!! Goins says there was a Sterling Service circa 1912-1922, a trademark for Thompson Hardware, can't help you more than that,if I don't read it in a book I know anyhing.Thanks for sharing.

Nice knife, originally it had bone handles. Valley forge/ Boker made them.

Do a search for Valley Forge plier-knife and you will find some

Thanks for the help. Now with that info I have found some pictures of originals and can see what this one would have originally looked like. I picked it up at a gun show over the weekend from a $5 an item your choice box. It sure looks a lot better in the pictures with bone handles than in aluminum. Also found an old thread on AAPK from 2011.

I don't find this exact stamp in my Goins book but all 3 blades are stamped and main blade has "oak leaf" etched in the blade. Mop handles.

I posted this earlier on another thread, but maybe it qualifies here too. J Howarth, Sheffield. Mumbleypeg got me some dates. Say roughly 1920-present. So I have no idea yet where this one falls. J Howarth made hand tools as well as knives. I've just started searching for info so I don't know much yet. But I think it's neat, and I'd never heard of them til I came across this knife.

I'm not sure how obscure this is, but I traded for this last weekend because I liked the proud wood handles-
Germania Cutlery Works. Levine's book says they made knives from 1892-1937.
