All About Pocket Knives

I only have a few Ulsters, a 3 3/4" Cattle knife with etch and an unmarked with a deer head pressed in the handle.

Fished this 3-3/8 inch Ulster pen out of the “bay” recently.
I was attracted to it because I had one just like it when I was about 10 years old. It’s difficult to find much about dates of Ulster tang stamps. What little I have found indicates this ULSTER KNIFE CO. stamp was used until 1941. However I bought the one I had in the late ‘50’s. I lost it on a Boy Scout camp out a few years later. I don’t recall the stamp exactly but I know the one I had did not have N.Y., or U.S.A., because I clearly remember at the time my buddies and I speculated that because it said Ulster the knife was made in Ireland!

So either the tang stamp charts are wrong, or the knife was in the retailer’s inventory almost 20 years!

The unmarked stag head was ordered that way by Val-Test. They ordered a few patterns from Ulster with no tang stamp but they came with a 'Keen Kutter Hand Made' blade etch.

Nice older EZ opener Dwight Devine & Sons USA stamped master and Ulster knife Co.on pen.

This seems to be redundant from what I can see and I apologize for that. I'm from Ulster County, Ny and want to get into collecting these guys. I picked up my first Ulster knife as I was drawn to the square looking sheeps foot blade. I know it's a Navy or rope style knife but I can't figure out what time period it's from.

The tang reads: "ULSTER/KNIFE/CO" all caps.
It's got wooden cocobolo scales
7 1/2 inches open
3 1/2 inch blade length
4 inches closed
Has the lanyard loop
Huge snap when it opens

I'm going to try to upload pictures:

Any help would be so much appreciated. I know these are tricky so just looking to get a round about idea of time period.

I'd love the idea of leaving the knife patina the way it is but sharpening it with my KME sharpening system and trying to add this to my working knife rotation. I really do appreciate it's blade shape.

Early Ulster sleeve board official scout , rare pattern for a scout knife . My guess is mid to late 1920s era . Finally found one with a decent blade etch

Here's a couple of Ulsters that are suppose to be the same knife... Despite both knives being stamped "1010" on the pile side, they are obviously not the same knife. The more recent acquisition is larger with the blade sitting much prouder. The pins & their arrangement is different. Even the shape of the handles are different. There is so much of a difference between the two that now I'm wondering how could they both be identified an the 1010 pattern?

Turns out my Ulsters are starting to dominate the rest of my collection.

A teardrop jack with ebony handles along with an Ulster knife opener...


a sleeveboard with a heavy duty spear point as the master... I came across a thread where knives like this were being called "Drillers", but were 4½" closed. Being only 3 9/16", would this one here be considered a "Driller"?

This is the Ulster knife I posted in the mystery knife game and I have concerns about it.
I have had the knife for 15 to 20 years and really never looked to close at it until recently.

Now it looks to good to be true. It is the 1st Ulster that I have seen with 4 Tang stamps. ScoutKnives (Mike) said he has several Ulster Scouts with all blades stamped so maybe that OK on this knife.

But the leather Punch Patent No 00833146 is registered to Seymour L Alvord of the Empire Knife Co
I have compared the knife to a dozen Ulster Scouts and the brass center scale does not match. This knife the center scale is not cut away equally on both ends. On the MB end the scale extend about 1/2" before it slopes into the frame.

The blades all seemed to be early Ulster styles. The MB has half stops and bail looks correct for a Ulster. The knife is 3 5/8" closed.
Overall this knife is solid in every way, and the blades are not overly tight, they snap as expected from a well built knife.

Soooo what do I have???
