Thanks gents! Phil, neck shot at 130 yards - little hole going in, but the 308 WIN, 165 grain Interlock came out the far side about the size of a tennis ball and opened the artery - she went quickly. OH

New resident...hanging out in the back yard, the last couple of days.

What an amazing critter they are, Doc. What animal in the world are they related too?
What do they eat?

My wife Googled and says they are related to anteaters and sloths. I get the anteater part...but that sloth part, hmmm. Google says it's because of a common projection of bone, on their vertebrae. I've seen them, a few times, up close...although, I don't recall seeing one in the yard. They aren't very spooked by people and you can get fairly close. They aren't super fast and will scurry off, when you get too close. According to Google they eat bugs, small invertebrates, fruits and carrion. They are pretty much, non-stop, rooting around in the grass and dirt.

Here is a short video of the first snowfall at the Alaskan lodge I was at this summer. Turn your sound off unless you want to hear my brothers footsteps and the rush of the Kenai River. The second link is a short video my son took at sunset of the storms that rolled through our area last night. No damage here, but Dallas County had tornadoes and lots of damage.

Armadillos will tear up a yard pretty quick with their rooting. Not like hogs but more like the amount that gophers would do.

Another name for the armadillo is "Possum on the half shell". Their eyesight doesn't seem to be all that great or they are just oblivious to things around them. They do have some rather quick moves when a person tries to catch one, they are surprising quick. We as youngsters were taught to grab them by the tail and keep them at arm's length as they have claws that will scratch, probably not intentionally but in their actions to escape.
Armadillos have caused many a deer hunter's heart to beat a bit faster. Foraging through fallen leaves, they sometimes sound like Bambi coming through the woods.

Sometimes when shot or frightened they will jump straight up in the air, about 3 feet off the ground, and spin in the jump. Funny to see.
As to their various names we also call the Texas speed bumps.

The vast majority of armadillos you see, around here, are dead on the side of the road. Probably 25-30 years ago, Lone Star beer had some advertising, with armadillos in the ads. It was not an uncommon site to see this, on the side of the road...

I'm surprised no one has made a Texas sized belt buckle out of that unique shell.

Joe I wish it was mine! It's one I found just to show that there are things that are made from armadillo shells. My bust I should have said something first.
