OOOPS! Who put this soap box under my feet??? Was I pontificating again?

Actually you are just a crotchety old codger with a gorgeous German boy scout knife and 93% of all the canoe's ever made. (that is 93% of the exceptional ones.)

Thanks Doglegg......I think. I'm not sure if I should be insulted or not.....you think I only have 93% of the cool canoes.

As they say on Antique Road Show " a conservative estimate" would be 93%.

Squatch, Kindly help out my miserable eyesight. What is that where the blade ricasso joins the handle and guard? The black thingy that, to me, looks like a gap in which moisture and dirt could enter the handle. Enlarged and with magnifying glass I still can't determine its nature. Thanks.

It's a hard leather washer (for lack of a better term) that protects the guard from slapping or rattling against the metal scabard similar to some swords and sabers. Here are a couple more pics.

Quick Steel,
I answered your post the first time without looking at the first photo again and I may have missed what you were asking. The leather washer I described in my previous post has a small gap where the tang passes through it. The guard appears to be solidly attached to the tang and if you look into that tiny gap you will see nothing but the polished stainless face of the guard, no seam or gap. The washer is about 1/8" thick so the opening you detected is only that deep and does not allow anything to get under the handle. However, as you pointed out, it is a small imperfection that could collect debris. If I ever put this knife in use I will need to include that little gap in the cleaning process. So your eyesight isn't as bad as you think!

I had not noticed it until you pointed it out.

Great minds think alike. I think...
Did you order one produced by Linder, or one offered by another cutler?

roofsc you have both a colorful good looking knife, but also a very nicely arranged photo. The top shot is especially impressive when enlarged.

Charlie this is about as "artsy" as I get. But I do like the knife. Thanks for the recommendation.
