All About Pocket Knives

Welcome Mike and you're off to a nice start. The Camillus was a steal at 5 bucks. They usually go for around $25 to $30. Nice clean-up on the Imperial.
If I could give you one bit of advice, start off by buying a few books on collecting. This will help you before you make the common mistakes when getting into collecting. Also....for the time being, buy what you like. Once you've bought more than a few knives (that's being conservative ) you will find a direction in your collecting.
I would suggest you buy Levine's Guide to Knives and Their Values, Volumes 2 or 3. Volume 4 is by far the best but costly. This is a book that belongs in every collectors library. Also, Steve Pfeiffer's "Collecting Case Knives". Steve is a regular here on AAPK and goes by the handle knifaholic. There are many other books and I'm sure other members will jump in to the conversation.

to AAPK, Mike. I'd say you've started off with a couple quality choices. There's probably way more than a handful of people here who started off with an Imperial and a MIL-K-818 "demo knife". I believe similar knives were among the first 5 I accumulated, too.

Soon you will discover that knives can talk. You will see a knife that clearly says "Buy me. I am yours" and you will simply have to buy it. I find this to be a very good way to acquire knives. I never tire of a knife that spoke to me clearly when i first saw it.

Thanks everyone. It looks like there is a 5th edition of Levines book that is less expensive than the 4th edition I'm assuming the 4th is more desirable for some reason?

The 4th edition was the last one done by Levine and the one most of us use. The 5th, 6th and Blade's 1st (did I forget any) were all screwed up. They have some additional information (sometimes way out of order) and some information that is incorrect or mislabeled. If you can get a number 4 reasonable, get it. ___Dave

Mike, I would also suggest that you get Gerald Witcher's book Counterfeiting Antique Cutlery. I am sure that you being a coin collector you know how many counterfeit coins there are. I think there is just as much of a problem in collecting knives. It is best that you handle and research as many knives that are available.

I rarely see these Warther Knives......scarfed 'em up out of the utensil tray at an estate sale.

At the fleas I gut me a five dot 64045 pited and delrin but great snap will be one of the grandies.The other has great pearl and pantina ,looks German

Not a knife, but a cutting tool made by a knife company - that's close enough. I've been wanting to pick up a line nipper for my tackle box (normally I just use a pocketknife) - saw this Buck product while browsing Academy Sports a couple of weeks ago - it had to come home with me. Saw some lures too.......OH

Yes I hit several a week. The etch is still visasble on this one and it's super snappy with hard 1/2 stops .

Found these in the shed today at the estate sale.....look like French Chef's knives.....

Wish I had the tools to make these into bushcraft knives or restore them....

Picket up one unmarked fixed blade Damascus with a nice sheath, a book called Checkering and carving Gunstocks that tell us amateur diddlers how to turn a $1000 gun into a $100 gun, and a box of 32 rimfire blanks that are so quiet that they don't even go bang when you fire them. I hoped to see if the little 32 single shot rifle I purchased a couple wees age fired without spending twice what I paid for the gun on regular bullets. The gun appeared to do it's part at denting the shell but the bullets appear to be to old to pop. I didn't pay much for the blanks so it was worth a shot. Here's the knife. ___Dave

Great score! Those Warther knives are top shelf. I have the paring knife identical to that I bought for $2. Found out the new price is almost $40.00!.
Here are three I picked up today at an indoor garage sale at the local fairgrounds.A Buck Whittaker 777T that needs batteries for the flashlight.Probably cost more than I paid for the knife.(2032 button cells).The Bushmaster I bought only because I don't have any of that make and it looked like a decent knife.The Guidesman I already have and it is well made for a Pacific Rim knife.NIP I couldn't go wrong. Five bucks apiece.

Picked this up from a flea guy yesterday. I don't see many Keen Kutters 'round here. The scribing is mostly faded (Kattel Knife, etc) but "891" is stamped clearly.
Anyone know when this might have been produce? I've done some research and can't come up with any dates.

The stamping without EC Simmons over it is from 1940 to 65. I don't know if anyone can narrow it down more than that. ___Dave
