I'd like to show you the knives I picked up at the Parker Show in Sevierville, Tn. this past weekend.

Great find! The 863 is just like a camillus 72 but better cause it's a schrade! (I may get some flak for that ) I think yours was made approximately in a 20 year period from 1953-73 when they dropped the walden part, the pattern was still made for a few years without the walden stamp. It's hard to tell but the handles look like delrin, which would narrow the age down a little. If I remember right I think schrade started using delrin as standard in the early 60's. I don't know much about schrade shields though.

The information I have says the 863 was made from 1953-1980.
Now that that's taken care of. All the Schrade Walden 863s I have have the "football" shield and Delrin handles.
Example: The only one I have with bone handles is a Schrade Walden Kon-Kave which has a "Federal" shield and different jigging.

Thanks Jerry and Paul . I believe this one is for sure bone. I know the Swindon system was pat in 63 and this has that. I need to get educated on schrades, I know very little about them.I have several camillus 72s and it's pretty much the same thing.

Kerry, I hate to keep harping on this but you need to look at the handles with some magnification and good light. Below is a comparison shot you can refer to. No offense intended buddy but some of that Delrin looks so much like bone it even fools experienced knifers.

Note no haversian canals in the Delrin.

Jerryd every knifer out there needs one of those little Chinese magnifiers for that task. Couldn't do without mine!

No offense taken Jerry. I will be honest this particular knife is hard to tell with the glass I carry in my pocket and I forgot to take it to work today. We have a microscope that I believe starts at 45x.
I learned from you guys what to look for but I can't say for sure until I get it under some magnification.
I also believe I can see a faint etch but not for sure.

MSteele I bought 3 of them and keep one wherever I might need to look at a knife. They are invaluable.

I know. The batteries in the light cost way more than that. I buy several and keep them for spares & occasional give aways.

Great finds fellers, those magnifiers are great little tools.

Two dot Buck 110 Folding Hunter at an antique and collectibles mall. Worked on sanding some scratches out of the blade last night and flushing the junk out of the joint with oil; starting to act like it should. Needs sharpening next - fun project. OH

A smooth rose case tooth pick came from a little antique shop. I thought 35.00 was a good price, never sharpened and very clean.

Tried to get that exact knife countless times, bids going up to north of double that amount, never brought it home... Nice find!

Not far from my hometown for 40.00 back in the fall. The place I got the toothpick at Friday had several
Smooth rose knives. They were all cv blades, I'm missing a few of the later ss blades. They are much harder to find. If I run across another toothpick I'll snatch it for you.

Thanks! I've seen a single listing for the un-etched one (same shield, though) and I went pretty heavy on it but ultimately lost out. I'd be interested to find out how many of those are even around. I'm slowly developing a little collection of Case smooth rose bone but sometimes finding the good stuff is almost like a full time job.
