Real or fake?

Real? If so I can't figure out year.

Can't figure out if this is real. If so what year?

I would say both the Case and Queen are real. Nice knives someone will come along and give an age estimate. The Case looks to be the vanadium plated blade variety and recall that being in the 1940-50’s but the memory ain’t what it used to be.

Looking at the Case tang stamps on the CCC site I couldn't find an exact match but it looks very much like the 1932 - 1940 fixed blade tang stamp. Could be a factory glitch when stamped. Hard to say.

The Queen is a real beauty too.

46-50 on the queen, the way i read it. Are the handles squarish on the handle edges or rounded?

In 1963, Dad was running the local swimming pool. The Assistant Mgr., James Raabe, said he would give me the knife if I could swim 3 lengths of the 25 m. pool. Good plan, I'll have to try this with my friend's son, although I have a feeling he'll only budge if he gets a new phone Although, maybe a small whitler will be suitable, since he is engaged in modeling small wooden boats


By the way, there is such an interesting problem. My friend has such a knife (first photo). There are no stamps, but there is an arrow-shaped shield, similar to Scagel. But it is definitely not Scagel, since it is a slightly different style and William made only 12 pieces of this type. Scagel made only 12 of these, and Scagel’s own photo taken by him with his Kodak folding camera depicts these 12 knives on page 98 of Scagel Handmade by James R. Lucie. This knife is the one pictured to the far right of Scagel’s photo. The full page photo of this knife is pictured on page 103 of the book, and is also the cover picture on the 1996 Calendar as well as the month of September. The overall length is 10-1/2″, with a fixed blade length of 5-1/4″, and the folder blade of 2-3/4″ length. Elk slabbed handle scales with brass rivets. Scagel’s silver arrow is affixed to the handle. Concerning this style knife, the reader is directed to the letter Scagel wrote to Bo Randall on September 21, 1939, in which Scagel admonishes Bo as to how difficult it is to make this style knife and that he (Bo) should “try to make one”. This letter is reproduced on page 221 of Scagel Handmade by James R. Lucie.

Maybe someone has seen something similar somewhere or at some time? As you can see, here the folding blade is hidden in the handle from above, and not from below, as is usually done. I also had a thought that this could have been an originally fixed knife, from which one side of the handle was removed, the tang was drilled and, as can be seen from the side, a folding knife was inserted

Oh, and here's my favorite fixed blade, 5 inch blade. Just recently learned how to make a proper wrist knot

It's interesting how the Scagel is full tang construction yet has a folding blade beside it.

I sure know what you mean, Tony, with me it's when I first get a glimpse of Garry's brightly colored posts that I'm almost expecting to hear triumphant heavenly trumpets accompanying the knife as I see more and more of his picture!
