News from Ruger, the first lever action Marlin rifle produced by Ruger is scheduled to hit the market by Christmas. Will be the model 1895 in 45-70. Going big! After that will likely be the 336 in 30-30.

Boji,
I always do a double take when I hear or read 1895, always thinking Winchester 1895. ::hmm::

That 45-70 is a formidable cartridge, back in the era of 10 gauge shotguns and such. Go big or go home was the motto I guess.

A long time ago (in the 80s?) I read an article which stated that a majority of Alaskan hunting guides carried a 45-70 rifle to back up their clients. If that was true, I don't know that it is true today.

It will be interesting to see what the selling price will be on those. Over $1000 for sure????

45-70 should get the job done. Worked pretty good on buffalo.

Watch this site once in a while but never have much to say. These gun pictures are bringing back memories of the good old days. We never even thought of using a shot gun on a squirrel or a rabbit. All winchesters, 06,62A, 61, and 63.

I was wondering if any of you like myself who reload your own ammo have seen any Alliant powder in your part of the country? Evidently they are still in business, although you would never know it from looking at the bare shelves in the gunshops. The story is they are selling all their powder to commercial loaders and have the thrown the little guy who buys 1 or a few pounds from them under the bus.The gunshop managers are not to happy about this also, as they have gotten nothing for over 2 years now. I personally have enough Alliant to keep me going for awhile, and when it is gone I will not buy from them again. Hodgdon powders, including IMR, and Winchester are readily available now and cover all the applications needed.

I know this post is a month old but I just saw it and thought I would reply to Olde Cutler on reloading. I have not seen alliant powder in a couple years. I use to shoot a lot of alliant Bullseye and Unique. The gun shops I frequent in Maryland and Pennsylvania have not had it. Apparently it is not just here on the east coast.

Alliant is a huge company and making powder for reloaders is a tiny part of their business. So when things got upset, the reloaders got thrown under the bus. I have part of a can of Green Dot and part of a can of Unique, and when that is gone there will be no more for me. I have already replaced what I have run out of with Hodgdon powders, which includes Winchester and IMR.

The other day my son went to the lgs and saw a nice old presafety (1980) Marlin 336 30-30 for a good price. He called my wife who’s out of town in Oregon for work and told her about it. She immediately called the boys at the lgs and as soon as they heard it was her, knew the exact gun she was calling about! I think I have a reputation! Long story short, she made the deal for the gun, then called me to tell me to go pick up my Christmas present. I’m happy as a hog in slop. Oh, and yesterday she went to a pawn shop out there on her day off top look for knives and wound up finding a barely used Ruger 10/22 dirt cheap and it is now on it’s way to our lgs. She’s a keeper for sure!

Here’s the old Marlin. She has some “beauty marks” from use, but is slick as a whistle and a good shooter.

While she was buying the 30-30, I was actually bidding on an 1952 Marlin 336 chambered in .35 Remington, my favorite deer caliber, on gunbroker. I was fortunate enough to win it! It’s an old perch belly forearm, waffle top that hasn’t been drilled and tapped with an old weaver peep sight. I haven’t shot it yet, but hope to bag bambi with it this week!

Needless to say, I have a wonderful wife, who feeds my addiction, and have been blessed to care for these old Marlins until the boys take em over.
