You have great knives Paul

Three very old cattle knives in different stages of use. All three are stamped JACK KNIFE BEN CHICAGO on the front tang and UNION STOCK YARDS on the back side. Think they were all by Napanoch. Most have the double fluted punch blade with PAT,D 4/7/08 stamp.

Those are amazing, JKB! That bone jigging and dye on each one is superb.

Thanks, I always wonder why they didn’t match the stag. Number on this one is 32175 with FOR CUTTING FLESH ONLY on the spey blade.

I came across this site last night. I found so much information and am thankful for it.
I am not a collector of knives but I will try to upload my every day knife.
My grandfather was the original owner of this knife but my father and I put most of the miles on it

The tang is worn on the spear blade but I see the numbers as 4665

Welcome to AAPK. Your “well loved” knife is a whittler pattern, not a cattle knife. There are numerous threads here about whittler patterns if you want more info. Just do a search for whittlers. Thanks for showing it.

I thought I read that the whitler numbers were in the range of R6000-R9000? I assumed it had to be a cattle knife

I can’t speak for the pattern number information you read, but I’m pretty familiar with knife patterns. There are hundreds of cattle knives shown in this thread, so you can peruse it to see what cattle knives look like. You can find pictures of whittler patterns by doing a search for whittlers. “Search” can be found under Quicklinks, upper left of this page. Your knife you showed is what’s called a “split backspring” whittler. Great family heirloom. You might learn more about it if you post a good clear picture of it on the Remington Collectors sub-forum here. viewforum.php?f=67 There are several Remington collectors here who know a lot about them.

I recently picked up this Ulster 35S, which I think fits into the junior cattle knife category. It has 3 blades, cigar frame, 3 3/8" OAL, with clip, spey and pen blades. The etching is still faintly visible on the master blade.

Nice pickup, Olde Cutler.

Picked up an Ulster Knife Co. junior cattle knife and a hefty Shapleigh Hardware one. I am at a loss on who might have made the Shapleigh. Any ideas appreciated.

Both in great shape.
