All About Pocket Knives

Chris, is that a Colonial? Never seen an Anvil knife with that shield - pretty cool! OH

Hi Chris, That is a nice knife.

I recently saw the pull on that Anvil here on AAPK and it stuck in my cranial cavity because it's short. For the life of me I can't remember the knife. That stinks because I just picked up a 72 clone with that same pull and no tang stamp.

OH, I believe it is a Colonial. I have an Old Cutler (Colonial) Texas Jack that looks very similar externally, now that one I do carry a lot.

OK then. While currently I have no pocket and thus no knife "on" me I offer up this:

Many other very nice knives try to kick this one out of right front. But those rounded bolsters, sunken joints, lovely bone and sharp CV steel make it hard to stay away!


Likewise, while an Ulster Scout calls out with it's SCARY sharp blade, I can't help but go back to this Imperial in the left pocket. The tang stamp is pretty worn away but there is enough to peg it as Imperial USA Prov. RI. It is solid with good snap, no blade wiggle and a GREAT awl! And I gave a whopping 50 cents for it!


Now some variety is possible in the watch pocket. The king is this Case but as you can see it has some blade rub. And the pen blade tries to break fingernails and cut me!


This Imperial USA Small Jack is a bit smaller than the Case. It has the cutest little pen blade. And it's pretty with that faux MOP!


This little Wards Gentlemans knife also gets the nod from time to time. Need to get a better pic or two.


For clipped OHO knife. My Favorite is the SOG twitch XL


But the smaller Sanrenmu knives are neat little carries. The 763 has "Axis" lock


And the 710 is a frame lock



There are other knives that I really like but these get the most pocket time.

Dang, Dave....everytime you post up that red bone CV Case humpback of yours it makes me want to get one, that is a fine looking knife for sure, I too really like that Case CV steel. I guess you have planted the seed in my head and sometime down the road when the stars align I'm going to have to pick me up one!

I can't 'splain it Mike except to say about the Sunken joints and well rounded frame. It is just a JOY to carry and cut with!

I like a Stockman knife for everyday use and I alternate between a Schrade 8OT & Schrade 34OT, as well as between a Buck 301 & Buck 303 (yeah, and some jackknives too). Quite often I find myself thinking, 'why don't/didn't they make a size in between the two?' Today I dug around my footlocker and found two Case 6318 Stockman that have never been used - who knows, might just be the perfect size pocketknife! One was made in 1977, the other in 2007 and both are still unused - breaking in the 2007 today (going to leave the 1977 in pristine condition). The quest for the perfect pocketknife never ends (thank goodness!) OH

A Phil Tham custom. That's dark brown micarta on the scales. 1095 with brass liners, it measures 4" closed.

Only had it a couple of days and I like it!!!

Not carrying it per say.
I gave this 3OT to my Dad some years ago. I had bought another at the same time so I have a NIB to compare this one to. This one has lost perhaps 5-8% of the blade. The tip isn't as pronounced.
It has a minute amount of blade wiggle but still locks up tight. I put a Hair Scaring sharp on it for him.

That Phil Tham is a great knife. I just looked at his web site. Good stuff.

Carrying today: a John Primble Belknap Hdwe Stockman 4" with MOP handles - beautiful knife. Mint.

I'm thinking, this one tomorrow.

My new favorite EDC is one that I just finished Friday evening.
Kershaw knives made in Japan in the 1980s are some of my favorite user knives, especially the ones with wood handles from the Officer Ranch series. The one I carry the most is a Wild Turkey that I put red, white & blue bone on several years ago. I like is so much I decided I needed another one.

I put caramel colored bone jigged to look like impala horn on the Wild Turkey. I tapered the bone down to the front so the end of the handle is thicker than the front which gives me a better grip. Last night for Fathers Day I barbecued some rib-eye steaks & the new EDC did a nice job of cutting it up.
I am lovin' my new fav EDC!
