We had my dad's memorial service this past Saturday in Cumberland and a couple buddies and their wives wanted to do the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad ride to Frostburg, so Brenda and I tagged along. It was a nice, breezy day and we had a great time. Conductor Bill was awesome too, he let us check out the Observation car before returning to the station. There was also an interesting barber shop onboard, but I can't imagine getting a haircut or shave on a train.
I took a video of them turning the diesel around on the turntable in Frostburg, will have to upload that later.

Don't think i would fancy having a cut a throat razor hovering over my face in that barbers chair. Stationary yeah OK, moving, no thanks.

Yeah, it is a switcher running local routes between small towns in my area. I need to take a few more pics of CN traffic, I miss the days of Illinois Central and have a tendency to ignore CN after they aquired IC. I saw this loco go by today, and the sun hitting what looks to be a fairly new paint job and I followed it on out of town to a rural crossing for the pic. A little research told me that it was built in 1978 for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific railway.

Ran across this interesting tidbit and accompanying pictures.....the speed record for a steam locomotive is 126 mph set in 1938. I was reading about the LNER (London North Eastern Railway) A4 locomotives and saw that one of them, named the Mallard, had made the record setting run while pulling 6 cars. Imo, this is a great looking old streamliner. Pictured also, is the crew from the record run.

The Mallard is an iconic steam train steeped in history. When you think about it, those speeds back then are mind boggling.

I am a few days late but just became aware that Union Pacific "Big Boy" 4014 is on tour. It left Wyoming on Aug 5th and is now in Eastern Kansas. Check out the schedule map to see if it will be near you. David (DM11), it should be passing near you on the return trip. It will be in my area the last of August and I plan to see the beast, this has been on my bucket list! The Big Boy is arguably the most iconic steam loco built in the U.S., make plans to see it!

Unfortunately I don't think the U.P. Big Boy travels East of the Mississippi. But if it did I would travel to see it.

Won't be able to catch it tomorrow. Maybe on its way back through.

Nice, Ike! I got a shot on this morning's coffee walk of two Norfolk Southern diesels on switching duty.
(Knifespeak- that's a bone handled, 9 bladed -44 pattern (diesel number). )
