Thanks Garry. It is a great feeling knife in hand. I would love to use this knife like it’s intended but my hunting days are all past. I’m lucky if I can go fishing now and then.

as to your question of the steel type... "the blade is Damascus, not sure if it’s carbon steel of more likely stainless steel." Damascus is combination of at least 2 different types of steel. Because stainless steel does not "stain" i.e. oxidize, and react to light acids as readily as carbon steel,
I would say it must be a combination of carbon steels... or if there is some stainless used it must have at least one type of carbon steel in it to see the contrast from exposing the metal to an acid and reveling the "Damascus Pattern" that makes the blade so beautiful. This was a custom knife I had made to my specifications with a giraffe bone handle. About ten years ago. I will not mention the custom maker's name even though he was new and made a good knife. Why? Because despite written and verbal agreements he failed to follow my blade length requirement. Hope I am not being petty.

M&M, I tried looking for some examples of various German made stag handled fixed blades with a quick glance at the European Knives thread, no luck so far.... I just get a "German" feeling on your blade there (
...also I really like it , that is my preference in that style of fixed blade 
) I was looking for Puma FBs for a long time.... oh did I love them 
.... but prices have gone through the roof, so I pulled back on picking them up these days...

Ken, The same issue came with the 2nd knife I ordered simultaneously with the first. I follow the views of Bill Bagwell who required a blade above 9" for an effective Bowie. I declined a refund and now consider my two customs to be attractive camp knives. As the late Mr. Bagwell explained, the longer blade on a Bowie enables the laws of physics and biology to accomplish some remarkable things.

I love the stag handle that is awesome! I add a good puukko to my pile whenever I can, so I really like the puukko style of knife. Great pictures! .... I love the wooden handled one as well. Here is a Kephart style from Anza.

Here is a Bowie with a 10" blade that I made some 20 years ago. Patterned after a Marble's Trailmaker.
