Beautiful gun, Byrd.
That case hardening is especially nice on that one.

That is great! I might need to try that.

Thanks all. It is a striking revolver. I've had an 1860 Army on order since the first of January but who knows when it'll arrive. The Italian factories have been hit hard by Covid so there's a shortage of BP supplies now!
On another subject. I had to fill out a Cabelas version of form 4473 to purchase this. It's because of the purchase of Cabelas by Bass Pro. The guy at the gun counter said Bass Pro was slimming down the guns and hunting section and replacing it with fishing supplies and boats. His opinion was they would eventually phase out firearms all together. Made me sad.

Sounds to me like they have already scheduled their next bankruptcy.

Another good business, run by idiotic people, bites the dust...
And as a small business owner myself, that just makes me plumb mad.

Haven’t added a new gun to my collection in quite awhile, but recently came across one of those guns I’ve always wanted - a Winchester Model 88 levergun chambered for the 243 WIN cartridge. A buddy is selling down his collection of hunting rifles and I decided I should go ahead and scratch a 30 year itch. The rifle is in 98% condition (the bore was put away dirty years ago but is sparkling now). I used the vintage Weaver base and rings (removed, cleaned, and re-installed) but threw away the busted vintage to the gun Weaver 1.5 - 5x, and put a 1988 vintage Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x40mm AO on it that I’ve had stored away for just the right rifle. Got 250 new Starline cases arriving via UPS tomorrow - have everything else I need to load for it - hope to get to the range next weekend. OH

That is an outstanding rifle! I can’t imagine a much better deer rifle for these parts than that set up. Very well done!

Yup mate, you picked a winner.
I bug my Dad & Bro, now, and again, that they
absolutely need to add one to there arsenals. If one likes Winchesters, Lever Guns, and 10/22 styling, then there is no comment, you must buy one. That tis an order!
From a newly criminalized Air Gunner...

Congratulations! That's a great lookin' 88!
Have you figured out what year it was made?
Just can't argue with the caliber, it'll do the job!

Great rifle and caliber Bruce!
I grew up only knowing. 22, .243 and 30-06. All we had and used. Still have my old .243.
Congratulations on a fine, good looking and effective pickup.

Jerry, great to see you post and hear from you - thanks!
Dogg, that one is older than mine, has the real cut checkering in the walnut - very nice!
My brass came today from Starline (no factory ammo anywhere to be found in 243 WIN) got everything else, got to work up a load and get it zeroed.

Some useless information.

Just heard on a local radio station, i am taking them at their word so cannot vouch for the accuracy, on this day in 1836 Samuel Colt patented the first revolver a .34. A piece of American history that had a huge impact on all who like guns, hunting and associated activities, and not knowing your history well enough i would think the Civil War.

Thanks for that, would it reasonable to assume that his patent was 25 years before the Civil War and that when the war broke out that gun manufacturing would have improved considerably since his patent, but his ideas were the catalyst for the improvements in gun technology. I just find your history so interesting and that a lot of things are inter connected as time evolves. Have a good day and take care.

Picked this up today at a pawn shop. Hardly fired Ruger Wrangler in .22 LR. I think it'll be a good grandson gun!

Yes he will! A friend has one and I was impressed with the build for an inexpensive revolver. It's just a plinker but it's minute of pop can at ten yards. That's all we need! I got him a Savage Rascal single shot a couple of years ago and last week he told me that he thinks he needs a bigger rifle! I got him hooked!

Does that have the Cerakote finish? If so, what do you think?
