This small Moose (3½" closed) came in yesterday. I'm not impressed with it. The quality isn't up to Rough Rider's normal standards. The handles are dull and the secondary blade spring is so weak there's almost no snap at all. I do like the looks of it but the manufacturing was a bit haphazard on this one. If I were Rough Rider QC, I would rate this one as a "second".

Just based on your pictures Jerry I would agree with your assessment. I have received recently a couple of RR that just didn't feel normal to me.
Have you seen the "High Plains" series? The online pic looks good with the dark brown smooth bone and a layered texture look. I may try one of those next.

The High Plains Series for those who don't want to take time to look them up. The ridges along the edges of the handles are what make them "High Plains".

I'm curious if you got your Moose from SMKW or another vendor? Every one I got from SMKW has been perfect. The only QC issues I've run into were ones I bought from ebay. Some were perfect (as far as RR standards) and some were sub par but still acceptable (slight cosmetic issues but good blades). I found the same issue with current Marble's knives. Three I got from SMKW are awesome (another due on Saturday). One I got from ebay (tortoise shell sleeveboard whittler) had blades so difficult to open the knife was dangerous to use so I returned it.

I think Rough Rider now contracts out to more than one manufacturer for their traditional style folding knives. Up until a few years ago every RR 'series' (e.g. "Rifleman", "Trapper Series", "Coal Miner", etc.) came out close to perfect. Now it seems that some of the series have more like what you might expect for a sub $20 knife, i.e. some issues like spring tension, edge sharpness, etc., while other RR series have every knife 'right on'. They might not all be made in the same factory.

The "Buckshot" RR's are heavy duty solid work knives. Heavier than other RR's of the same size. They are definitely intended for real world use.

Tell me Joe. What do you think of the Viet Nam Moose?

I also rather fancy that RR1892 Tobacco Road Brown Bone Bow Trapper.

Just got this muskrat SMKW.
The fit and finish is about as good as it gets.
It has half-stops which I prefer.
