All About Pocket Knives

I love milled liners. It adds a touch of class to the knife. Camillus did that on their Deluxe line until up in about the '70s. Maybe someone figured out it was cutting into the profit margin and didn't really generate enough more in sales to justify it. Dirty shame.

What about that very long nail pull.
I belive the 886UH on the left-hand side was made by Cumillus.

The 886 was indeed made by Camillus/Cumillus. This has been discussed numerous times.

That woman did the jimping for Schrade Cut. Co. and also Schrade Walden when they were actually still in Walden. Not sure what the fixture looked like but I know she able to do it on her kitchen table. The work was done on finished knives, not beforehand as some may believe.

I am surprised that the jimping was added after the knife was assembled, but now that I think about it, it makes sense.

I think Camillus jimped or worked their liners prior to assembly. On some Camillus knives I have taken apart I see jimping that has been done on the liners before they are assembled. It looks as if they have been run through a press that presses the pattern from the side onto the edge of the liner.
I think a lot of the Deluxe Stockman patterns had this, the #69 is a good example.

I will see if I have an example of this and post a picture. I may have a parts knife.

That is weird. Makes more sense to me to do the gimping before assembly but I suppose if you saw it done, you would probably change your mind.

Dale, I have a Camillus 80 Deluxe Carpenter's & Whittler's (also an 80 made for Wards under the Powr-Kraft brand) and two Camillus 69 Deluxe Stockmans. The 80 (and the Powr-Kraft) both have gimping on the middle liner down on the bottom where the springs are in addition to the gimping on the blade well side. The 69's do not have the middle liner gimping.

Edit: BTW, just a side note. They stopped gimping the #69 DeLuxe pattern sometime in the late 60's or early 70's.

Thanks Jerry, I was wrong on the model number.

My point was that the jimping on those were done before the knife was assembled, as opposed to the jimping on the Schrades that were done after the knife was assembled.
It appears that the Camillus jimping was pressed in from the side on the edge of the liner.

These things stick in my head as a knife mechanic, I am always trying to figure out they did them.

If the type of jimping that Schrade did was done before assembly, it would simply be ground off when the back was finished. There's always some liner material taken off when the backs are done, and this jimping doesn't go deep. Same with the front edge. Take a close look at the front edges of the knives Jerry posted, see how some of the cuts were transferred to the handle material as well? This was done after the front edge was ground. Same type of jimping, although maybe a bit overdone as it shouldn't hit the handles that much on some.

Personal opinion, I don't care that it carries over onto the handle material. I hadn't noticed it until you pointed it out and I love jimping (gimping) on a knife. For me, it adds a touch of class that sets the knife off from others.

No problem Jerry and I totally agree with you, doesn't bother me either as I have it on some of my knives as well. I think it has to do with the cutters and methods that were used. On the older hand done knives you can see where sometimes it would carry over into the handles just slightly, but then stop abruptly. Seems they used a lot narrower tool. The hafting makes a difference too, it's more noticeble on knives with a lot of meat against the liners rather than those where the handles start to curve away immediately after the liners.

Just received my 108OT Grand Dad Old Timer in the mail .I had the other four but did not know they made it in a 108OT.It has the Schrade NY USA tang stamp .I have only seen one one Ebay in the last few years.

That 108OT Grand Dad is a new one on me. Nice pick up!

Grant, I have almost finished my display Case that I have been working on for many years now.
When finished, this large glass display should hold most of my Schrade collection.
I have two mint 858OT knives in the brown box, both without the + stamped one the blade.
I know those 858OTs bring top $$$ and I would have liked that one for my display.
However, I would not pay any more that my last bid. (money is hard to find now-a-days)

It has taken me five years to find and repair my display case - some of the amour-plat glass cost about $300.
The lock on the two sliding doors was almost about $200. When the display is finished I could live in it!

I had one of these for a few years, won it on Ebay in January 2007, sold it quite a while back. It was the first 858OT I owned, came in a Schrade Old Timer brown box with the lid. When it arrived the etch and machined liners were a complete surprise. I bought it in January 2007
