Hi Folks, I'm waiting for my cameras battery to charge before I can post a pic of the knife I have questions about. In the meantime, I thought maybe some of you scout knife collectors might be able to help me out. I picked up a scout pattern knife at a pawn shop last weekend. It is 3-5/8" long, better then average quality and it's in excellent condition. It has heavy brass liners with nickel silver bolsters, pins, dog bone shield and bail. Handles look to be jigged black bone. It has the typical 4-blade configuration of spear primary, fairly short screwdriver/cap lifter, a longer then normal punch and a somewhat odd can opener. The can opener is shaped a little like a stubby sheepsfoot blade with a flat tab thumb lift opener. There are no tang stamps of any kind but it appears to me that it has the faint remains of a blade etch. If I'm not mistaken, I think the etch says Winchester. There is also what appears to be the word "The" above it. I can definetly make out the last letters of the etch as being "ster" and if I hold it in the light just right, with magnification, I can make out the ghost letters of the rest of the word Winchester. But it's just too faint to be positive. The style of lettering is also that of the classic Winchester logos. Does anyone know if the earlier Winchester's used blade etches and no tang stamps? Are the blades as described, ones that would be on an earlier Winchester? If not a Winchester, got any ideas as to the maker? Any help would be appreciated. LOL! As long as this post is, you'd have thought the batteries would have charged up by now. I'll give 'em a bit longer and post some pics ASAP. Thanks.

While I was waiting, I came across a dead ringer for this knife in the IBCA Guide listed under the LF&C Universal brand. However there is no sign of the LF&C tang stamp and the blade etch definetly does not say Universal. I put it under as heavy of magnification as I have and now wonder if it might say "The Forester"??? Anyone heard of this one?

The etch on the blade would have read "The Winchester Store"

Thanks Miller Bro's, that makes perfect sense! That should date this knife to around the late 20's to early 30's. A little older then I would have guessed in reading the knife. Great thread, all the pics and scout knife info here are awsome! I appreciate the help! WB

Here's a nice old Dunlap scout that Orvet sent me this week. He did a little sprucing up on it and even added a bail to replace the one that was missing.

Blade's Guide to Knives and Their Values shows Dunlap as a name used by Camillus on knives produced for Sears. Tom Dunlap was the hardware buyer for Sears and also created Craftsman tools in 1926. According to this listing, the knife would have most likely been made sometime in the 1930s.

Goin's Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings shows Dunlap as a tang stamp used by Johnson & Dunlap Hardware in Macon, Georgia which later became, in 1877, Dunlap Hardware. The date range shown on this listing is c. 1877-1930.

Since that was all a bit before my time I'm not sure which listing would apply to this particular knife although the spiral punch has me leaning hard in the direction of the Camillus connection.

This is a tale of two scout knives. The first one is a Royal Brand, Goins says 1914-54, located at 106 Fifth Ave. N.Y. It is obvious that they were retailers not manufactures. The knife is missing its bail otherwise it is in good condition. I seen it for sale and did not think much of it, but I have learned to check out every knife carefully. I opened the master blade and discovered it was stamped Royal Brand. I knew I did not have one of these in my scout collection so I bought it. The jigged handles looked familiar to me so when I got home I looked around for one that I may have that is similar.

Then I came across the this one. It is a Union Knife Works N.Y. Goins says 1911-1913, located in the little town of Union N.Y. He goes on to say that it is unknown exactly when they started in business, but they were first listed in a directory in 1911. They were only in business for a few years and closed by 1913. This is the only example of this brand scout knife I have ever seen, and I have seen and owned a lot of scout knives.

Take a look at the photos, I have side by side pics for comparison. It is clear to me that both were made by the same manufacturer. How can this be when Union went out in 1913 and Royal Brand started in 1914? Unless Goins is wrong and Royal started in 1913, or Union lasted til 1914

Miller Bros. have you considered the posibility that the later company might have purchased existing equipment and/or inventory from the former company, somewhat like what took place with Pal acquiring Remington ?

Just grabbed this off the bay for $23.50 - What maker do you guys thinkit is, I might see Ulster in one of the pics?
Cool that it has the stone w/pouch and box. I will clean it up and post better pics when I get it.

TC that sure looks like an Ulster USA to me, although Camillus and Imperial also had very similar models. If you look back a ways on this thread you'll see just how similar they really are. I look forward to seeing some better pics. Nice buy.

Could be one that was put together by PAL when they bought them out.... ......looks a bit odd ...but genuine.

Hello Gene,

Welcome to the Boy Scouts. Your knife is indeed a Remington RS3333. According to my reference book, Official Scout Blades by Ed Holbrook, that particular model of the RS3333 was made from about 1935-1939. I base that on the lack of rings in the bolsters and the horizontal lift tab on the can opener blade. I think the reason the knife looks a bit different as JR said is that it has been well used. The spear blade has been sharpened down considerably and the sheild shows a lot of pocket wear. Still all in all a nice example of the knife that has apparently worked for a living and been well cared for.

Johnnie, your knife was made in the 1960`s or later.

Cool older greenbone Imperial here. Hasn't arrived yet, but the sellers pics are better than I can do.

That knife is proof positive that Imperial made a quality knife. Love those handles.
