All About Pocket Knives

I, too, have purchased a lot of knives from ecop! and this is the first clinker. I don't fault the seller in this instance as I'm sure they got a large shipment and can't physically check each and every knife. It's just the luck of the draw. I have a few other made-in-China knives and none of them have any issues, so I think I probably just got a bad apple. We'll see if the replacement knife is any better.

I'm not saying my Winchester is perfect but the blades click and clack like they should. The only real problem is cosmetic. The brass liners are not finished properly. I noticed the same thing on yours.

For the price and the reason I got it, I'm not going to throw a fit and stomp my feet. It's not like it's the centerpiece of my pile. Now on that Tony Bose Case I bought, something like that would be a HUGE deal.

It's been years since I owned a Frost knife, in fact, now that I think about it, I believe it was precisely because of the Frost knives I owned in the past that I decided to quit bottom feeding and up my game. Got tired of guzzling rotgut swill and quickly developed a taste for finer spirits of a certain vintage and pedigree.

But then jerryd comes along with a nifty (and cheap) little Chinese Winchester that causes me to ponder if perhaps my "price prejudice" was purely pompous pretension and I ought to reconsider my disdain and reevaluate my elitist perspective.

So, I returned to my roots and picked up this very inexpensive (but not necessarily 'cheap') made-in-Japan Frost mini trapper. I'll be the first to admit that it's not much to look at (for some reason both Parker and Frost seemed obsessed with scorching knife handles), but the quality is really not that bad. It's all relative, of course, but this Frost Mini T isn't quite as "cheap" as I remembered Frost knives being...and it's definitely a few rungs higher up the quality ladder from the Chinese Winchester I got.

Those handles are fugugly and make the knife "look cheap". So I went looking for one. Didn't find it but I did find this Frost Mini-Trapper. It should be here this week.

Yeah, it definitely won't be winning a blue ribbon at the county fair and I wasn't planning on entering it into any beauty contests. Truth be told, I found it by accident while looking at sharpening stones. Even the ad copy on the packaging puts the knife secondary to the main item, the Washita stone. Hiding this ugly duckling in a "Gift Set" with a sharpening stone, oil and cedar storage/display block was probably the only way they could unload such an unattractive knife.

You clever fella. I never would have stumbled on to it. Now you can tell folks that you bought the stone and the knife just tagged along for the ride.

OK, that's enough "slumming", the Monkey has a voracious appetite that must be satisfied. The yellow Winchester was unpalatable and the Frost was unappetizing; the Monkey demands higher quality cuisine.

Time for some fresh fare...perhaps a serving of olives and millennium oysters to go with the Monkey's "whine".

I've got a job for you...Actually, it's more like an OCD Monkey riddle...But, solving this riddle may be prove to be hard work...It just depends on how well-honed your OCD skills are (yes, OCD requires a certain degree of skill, don't let anyone tell you otherwise! )

To solve the riddle you must first determine the pattern OCD Monkey saw in this particular group of Mini Trappers and why he arranged them just so?

The answer is hidden from view

Ahh, so they're in chronological order. Didn't think of that because the tang stamp is difficult to see and decipher. (plus I didn't think of it. )

Although it would be neat if they were (not to mention supremely satisfying to OCD Monkey with his obsessive compulsive disorder for order), they are not, in fact, in chronological order.

When you see what's "staring you right in the face" and make the connection to what's "hidden from view", you should be able to solve the riddle.

Fun Fact: Not that it will help with the solution, but the reason OCD Monkey concocted this whole elaborate contrivance was because he happened to discover that he did not have the missing "mystery knife" in his collection. Needless to say, that discovery caused him no small amount of alarm, frantic panic and desperate despair. So, believing it must be a rare model, and true to his OCD nature, he immediately flew to eBay to see if there were any for sale. Surprisingly, there were plenty; it's not rare at all...it just happens to be one that never called out to him before. So, a reasonably priced model was summarily selected and promptly purchased. Unfortunately, it probably won't get here until sometime next week--coming all the way from Maine, the farthest state possible from Hawaii.

I want to tell folks that contribute to AAPK how interesting and some times how strange certain threads turn out, I really enjoy our forum.
All that to say, this one, Ode to The 07, is like listening to dueling banjos! Even though a good number of folks have contributed to our enhanced learning and enjoyment, Q and Jerryd have kept me entertained to the utmost!

That my name would even be included in the same breath with jerryd is mighty high praise indeed to a johnny-come-lately wannabe collector like me. Although to the novice eye it may appear as if I'm the one driving this 07 clown car, please don't be fooled, jerryd's the real ringmaster; I just take my cues from him and follow his lead.

Knives like this one really give OCD Monkey hyper conniption fits, though.

Because OCD Monkey has very little tolerance for so-called "factory errors" such as the blooper on this Mini T glaring like a headache inducing neon sign smack in the middle of a peaceful pine forest.

Incredibly, it's even printed incorrectly on the box label! (Although, the seller tried to cover up or "fix" the error by scratching out the pattern number on the label before shipping it to me!)

Here's my latest 07 pick up...and yet another in a long line of 07s for which I have jerryd to thank/blame. I'd seen several different John Deere Mini T models, but none of them really caught my eye like the one jerryd posted awhile back. (IIRC, it was one he had to get a replacement shield for.) Ever since then I've had a hankering for one just like his: corncob jigged yellow bone with a green shield. Took me awhile to find one for a reasonable price, but when I did, I snapped it right up. (The price some sellers are asking for this knife, you'd think it was super rare and made of solid gold!)

Good snag ~Q~. I really like that one for some reason. I think it's because the yellow is so bright and in your face and the bright green shield is so understated yet compliments the yellow so nicely. It would still be nice if the shield were larger but not quite as attractive. That's probably just me.

On quite a different topic, we are a baaad influence on each other.

Well, it's been a week since OCD Monkey posted his Labor Day Riddle and no one has solved it. Of course, it's always easier to make up a riddle than it is to solve one; but, truth is, OCD Monkey is really not that clever and (like most riddles) the answer is not really that complex.

Jerryd has already (sort of) figured out one part of the riddle by identifying the tang stamp as the thing that is "hidden from view." But, each Case knife has two tang stamps.

The second part of the riddle says that the answer is "staring you right in the face." So, when you look at the knives in the line up, what is the most obvious thing you see? How does that relate to the hidden tang stamp?

To help you out, here's the answer to the question "What knife should fill the empty space?" Now, can anyone figure out the pattern of the ten knives in the line up? (Hint: use the AAPK Research feature)
