DAY 116
jerryd6818 wrote:I don't have a complete identifying chart but I have figured out some of them.
The model # 032 229
03 = handle material, in this case stag
2 = number of blades
2 = blade profile, in this case a spear blade
29 = knife pattern, in this case English Jack
It's a daunting task and I only have a few documented
jerryd: I knew I could count on you to have broken the the S&M code, after all, your code-breaking skills are nothing short of awesome (to refresh your memory, see DAY 10, the third day of the color wheel contest). Thank you for enlightening me about S&M pattern numbers, I'm glad to finally know; but, creating an entire spreadsheet to organize the information...dude, that is dangerously close to OCD territory. Furthermore, you have upset OCD Monkey by putting "29 English Jack" in the 14th row--all the other rows are numbered consecutively, so why is 29 in row 14?

C'mon man...I just got out of the hospital, are you trying to incite OCD Monkey to drive me so crazy with his incessant chattering about correctly numbering spreadsheet rows that I'll get thrown into a padded cell in a mental institution?
And speaking of your spreadsheet, now you can add pattern #51 (and please, oh please put it in row 51 just to appease OCD Monkey). But, what name will you give it, "Mini Trapper"--like yesterday's Mini TrapPER DIEM example? or "Dogleg Jack"--like today's example? They both have the exact same pattern number: 042 151, and they do share all the same characteristics according to the pattern number, i.e.,
04 - bone handle
2 - two blades
1 - clip master blade profile
51 -

Mini Trapper? or Dogleg Jack?
Today's Mini TrapPER DIEM is another Schatt & Morgan Jigged Red Bone 042 151...but wait...what has happened to the spay blade? Looks like Lansky1 got ahold of it and performed one of his "surgical mods" on it, cutting the spay down to a pen blade. But something tells me that changing the bone jigging style, the blade etches on both blades as well as their respective positions and the tang stamp on the reverse side of the master blade is beyond even
his legendary skills. Besides which, if this were a Lansky1 mod, at least one of the blades would've been a wharncliffe...or a sheepfoot. Of that we can be certain. (See below for reference)*
No pressure, jerryd, but OCD Monkey is in a highly agitated state awaiting your decision on what to call S&M pattern 51 on your spreadsheet: Mini Trapper

Dogleg Jack

........

Mini Dogleg Trapper Jack
You may not realize it, but everything you say related to mini trappers carries great weight with OCD Monkey...apparently he considers you to be an omniscient Mini-Trapper Guru (as do I).
~Q~
*Classic Lansky1 mods (and yet another good excuse to show off some repeats!)

- CASE Ratcliffe

- Moore Maker Modified Mini Shepper/Trapfoot

A clip and a pen swung from the same end like that is a Jack Knife. However, that said, the manufacturer is free to call it whatever they like. Collectors are the ones who got all up tight and outta sight over labels.

Yes the former. I get very confused reading anything using more than one syllable...

Good luck with that, John...you'll be lucky if anyone remembers to get ol' grandpa anything for Xmas with a new grandbaby in the family. The only thing you're likely to be opening on Xmas morning is a dirty diaper. But just remember...the baby
is the gift. Now, if you told your wife that you wanted a new camera in order to take more pictures of your grandbaby instead of knives, I guarantee you'd not only get a new camera, but the top of the line, most expensive model with all the fancy settings.
But, speaking of wonky...my Mini TrapPER DIEM for today is both wonky and funky...but in a good way. It's definitely not like anything else in my collection...I tend to prefer quality and class over gimmickry and I'm not sure exactly which camp this one falls into. What it does have, and the reason I bought it, is a certain unique character, by which I mean to say: it has a cool shield (OK, I'll just admit it...it's a gimmick knife). I can't help it, I'm a sucker for unique tang stamps and shields, which makes sense when you think abou it since after a while collecting the same pattern knife they can all start to look more or less the same. So, it's the details that distinguish one knife from another and keeps me in the game, constantly searching for that next mini trapper that catches my eye and incites my passion to acquire it. Every time I look at this funky little knife, it brings a smile to my face...and, after all, isn't that the whole point of collecting, anyway?

If you look closely, it appears that Daniel Boone has a sly little smile on his face. I can't help but wonder if that's because he finds it humorous that anyone would actually pay $24 for this knife--I wonder how many pelts that would be equal to in his day (1734-1820)? Or perhaps he's thinking, "Seriously? I discovered the Cumberland Gap which effectively opened up the entire American western frontier to European settlement, and this is how my legacy is memorialized...on a mini trapper made in China? Unbelievable!" The Shawnee Indians (among most other Native American Tribes) may feel differently, but anyone who lives west of the Appalachian Mtns. owes Daniel Boone a debt of gratitude.

Well, jerryd, I must say I admire your self discipline and control. When I see a knife I want, I usually just buy it...I can't stop myself...I'm an addict. I had things pretty well under control these past couple of months, but I've already fallen off the wagon and made a few purchases that I'm going to have to find a way to explain to (or hide from) my wife. I've already blown my January discretionary (i.e., knife) funds, so, hopefully, I won't see any more mini trappers I want until Spring. Yikes! that seems like a very long time to go without a "fix"...I'll probably suffer withdrawal symptoms...possibly even get DTs.

I'd say it did just fine. That's a beauty for sure. Nice shot, too, against the gray background. (You should post that one in the
Knife Photography thread as well.)

Dude...where have you been hiding these past 117 days? If you've got any more mini trappers like the two you've shown today, I think you're just the guy we need to take over and run with the Mini TrapPER DIEM torch until jerryd or I can catch our breath and get back in the game. Perfect timing, too, since I'm down to my last few mini trapper crumbs. (I was hoping to make it to the end of the year, but it looks like I will only make it through Christmas before I'm out.)
So, let's see if you can get your magic cigar box to cough up some more gorgeous vintage Mini T's.
Cheers & Aloha,
~Q~
Although I do have some older OTC (Other-Than-Case) minis, this one from 1972 is my "most vintage" 07:

DAY 118
Excellent choice of handle material, and a beautiful custom mini mod, indeed.
I love the clean, uncluttered look of today's Mini TrapPER DIEM. It has a smooth white bone handle, which, while not the same thing as ivory, is the next best thing...and way more affordable. This Parker-Edwards also has a lot of "5s" in the pattern number, so it ticks a number of boxes for me (I'm partial to the number "5" because of my name.)

DAY 119
I don't know what the weather's like where you're at today, but I do know that today's (and yesterday's) Mini TrapPER DIEM is as close as I'll get to having a white Christmas. (And, to be perfectly honest, as far as I'm concerned, a couple of smooth white bone mini trappers is so much more preferable than cold white snow any day of the year...Christmas included!)
Today's Mini TrapPER DIEM is the fraternal twin to yesterday's...the only difference between them is the spay blade on today's Mini T. Interestingly, the addition of an extra blade doesn't change the pattern number, so, apparently, number of blades isn't part of the Parker-Edwards pattern numbering system.
Here they both are together (to prove I didn't use trick photography or Photoshop just to extend the Mini TrapPER DIEM thread an extra day).
See, they both have exact same pattern number

DAY 120
Like the last dying ember of the Christmas Yule log, I present my final Mini TrapPER DIEM of 2018. Yup, this is it--after 120 days and untold numbers of beautiful mini trappers...I'm all out, kaput. We'll see what mini trapper treasures 2019 has in store.

Thanks, John.
After some reconsideration, I have decided to end 2018 on a slightly different note. I know not everyone (incliding GEC) would consider these #48's "Mini Trappers", but they measure 3 7/8" which is right at the top of the size limit for Mini Trapper classification, so I'm going to allow it. Besides, two other GEC #48's have been previously shown in this thread; one by big homer and one by Tsar Bomba, so the precedent has already been established.
I would like to invite anyone who has a GEC #48 to go ahead and post it now (even if you've already posted it here before). Let's end the 2018 Mini Trapper year with a BANG!

- 2013 Smooth Ivory Bone

- 2010 Ram Horn
Happy New Year, Everybody!
