This has been one of my favorite Buck patterns since the day it was introduced back in the early '90s.

Since we're on the subject of Buck knives, here's one that has been a perennial favorite in hunting camps, fishing camps, and general outdoor activities for years. I've seen more of these in my years of hunting, fishing, and camping than any other single fixed blade. The venerable 119.

A fairly new addition to the Buck line up in 2017 (I believe) that didn't seem to be very well accepted for some reason. A fixed blade version of the 110 dubbed the Buck 101.

If that's a fixed blade Buck I am impressed, Charlie!
On first glance I had it pegged for a 110, no doubt about it, and if it only had a brass pommel it would be totally special.
Doesn't make sense to me that it wasn't widely accepted, cuz I'm really liking it!

Well Marco, I guess most people felt that the 110 folder was all that they needed. I'm not sure but the 101 is currently discontinued. You cand still find one for sale here and there though. If you're interested here's a link: https://nordicknives.com/collections/buck-knives

It didn't receive much attention after the introduction. It's a solid knife as you would expect from Buck. One of the things that I suspect caused a lack of interest is the fact that it is very handle heavy, no balance, much the same as a 110 locked open. On the up side, the large handle is not that large in my hand. Easy to hang on to. The Macassar ebony scales are beautiful and durable, the same material as the folders. Overall it's a good knife that just didn't catch on.

The 192 Vanguard is a beautiful knife. It is the perfect size for a general purpose knife. I think it is very similar to many of the bushcraft knives that are so popular now, just classier. I also had the 692 which is the Vanguard with the black rubberized handle. I lost it, along with some other gear, during a move years ago. I keep meaning to pick up another one but haven't done so yet.

Bang for the buck this one is hard to beat.

I got bored last week and decided to take a drive to Grand Prairie Knives just for something to do. Didn't want to spend much. Just wanted to get out of the house for a few hours. These two Morakniv Eldris models is all I came home with. The orange one goes in my brother-in-law's stocking for Christmas but I'm keeping the red one.

I have a blue one that I bought when I first started my journey into trying to find a fixed blade that could do real work but fit in a coat pocket. And it will do real work (however, I find the old-style Classic #2 with the plastic sheath just works as well as a coat pocket knife). They make a belt loop that snaps onto the sheath (designed for the Garberg, I think--but the Eldris has the same handle diameter) that also makes it handy. Heck, mine was so unnoticeable on the hip, I walked into Tractor Supply straight from farm chores and forgot I had it on me.

The one problem I have is the 90" steel striker spine. It's not very comfortable for extended use. The Light Duty version is made with a standard rounded shoulder on the spine, so maybe it'll be more comfortable for whittling and carving.

I saw those belt loops and I wondered if the knife was easy to deploy using one of those. The knife snaps pretty securely into the sheath which is good but it seems like it might be difficult to deploy from the sheath when hanging from a belt. I have a blue one also that I use in the garage and sometimes for yard work. This new red one is for my glovebox. I use both hands to deploy both of them.

I did notice the somewhat sharp edges on the spine.

Is yours difficult to deploy when hanging from a belt?

Camillus USN Mark 1 Deck Knife (post WWII overrun production) in a Randall sheath.

I bought the Mark I several years ago for something like $8 shipped. In terrible condition (mainly--heavy pitting, and it appeared that it had been used as a cold chisel, given it was so badly chipped, you'd swear it was serrated). Despite originally being intended for my military knife collection, it saw regular use (and was the knife that made me realize a 5" blade will do everything you need a fixed blade for). I had made a crude sheath from a Hobby Lobby kit, but it didn't work. Took me a lot of time to remove rust, get the leather washers decent, and sharpen out the massive number of dings.


I went to my local knife store with a slightly smaller knife in hand (PAL RH-70) hoping to find a sheath for it. They have big bins with random cheap Mexican-made sheaths in them--which are low-grade junk. I was quite surprised to find a Randall sheath (with stone pocket cut out) for $25, and I bought it as A: it did fit and B: the leather quality was great and C: I've wanted a Randall for ages. So, I snapped that sucker up immediately. A little big for the little PAL/Remington, but it fits the mighty MK I like a glove.


Randall lists the sheath as being for the #25-5 Trapper with 5" blade. I'm curious how old this sheath is.
Gotta admit, the #25 Trapper is a gorgeous knife, but I couldn't spare a half a grand. I can always hope I happen upon a flea market seller who doesn't know what they've got. I also have to admit, the sheath much easier to use than Bucks with their wraparound design.

It's really no different than any fixed blade, but the rather soft and flexible leather Mora uses for the belt loop attachment allows it to move more than the typically rigid leather (or the hard plastic belt clips on other Moras) belt loops on my other fixed blades. I suspect it's probably intentional, just like the dangler on a Puukko.
