Hello everyone! Bought myself a new gun.
Savage 99C series a with magazine, mid 1980's production.
Need to post some pics of it.
Any ideas on ammo for it? Bought some remington 150 grain corelok ammo. Going see how it shoots then buy some other ammo to see what shoots best.

Willy, the 99C will handle any 308 ammo you put in it. The twist rate doesn't really matter but it probably 1 in 10 or 1 in 12. Really long bullets may not function in the magazine but your run of the mill 150 grainers/165 grainers should be no problem, 180 grains same. Make sure you keep the stock bolt snugged up. The butt stocks are known to crack at the tang on top. Tight but not too tight.

Colonel26 and steve99f asked about the old top break S&W. Research shows these were manufactured from 1878-1892. Smokeless powder was invented in 1884 so I would be hesitant to crank off a round, not knowing how the about cartridges that were in the pistol when I got it.
If I'm going to need to crank of some serious rounds, I can go to this old gal: I figure Mr. Colt needed a bit of attention too.

But I'm sure it'll shoot fine. It's me that has very little time behind a pistol grip.
I shot well enough with the M-16 to qualify as Marksman several times in the Air Force. Never had the chance to qualify with a handgun.

Yup. Steppin' back to the 1880s. Saving my pennies for this... Will be ordering it from Mernickle Holsters. Not sure if I want the mahogany brown, shown, or go lighter with saddle tan.

Either way, Steve, its going to look great. My tastes favor a lighter tan, but that's me not you. Whatever you decide will look great.

That rig would look good in any color!

I’ve never shot one of the Colt snake guns, but I hear they are some kind of awesome.

Whenever my guns just aren’t shooting right, I find it always boils down to one nut that’s out of adjustment. It’s the nut pulling the trigger! lol YMMV

Had a great time at the range with a couple of my buddies.
They're more into the tactical side. Along with my wild west shooters, we had 9mm, 45s, ARs, and an "Other" (the one closest on the bench) a Troy A4. "Other" because it doesn't qualify as a pistol or rifle. My Henry took about 3 trips to the range last year before I got it dialed in and hitting where I wanted. As I said, I have very little time behind a hand gun so today's shots with the SAA were everywhere. A few more trips and I feel pretty confident I'll be hitting at least close to where I want.
The Uberti felt good. Smooth, easy trigger pull. All the mechanics of the weapon were smooth. I'm quite pleased!

Great pics Steve! Looks like my kind of day! When me and the boys or my buddies shoot, it’s always everything from revolvers, to semiautos, to AR’s, to lever actions, to shotguns. We don’t shun any of them. We’re inclusive that way ! And they’re all fun for different reasons.

Dogg, I had a Henry 22 for a little while and it was smooth, good guns. But when it comes to 22’s this is my go to. 1973 JM Marlin 39M.

Guns are fun. Invite an anti-gunner to the range. There is a fair chance you will make a convert.

I can't recommend them enough, the older ones that is. All of mine are old pre safety (lawyer wart) Marlins. But even the newer ones with safeties are good guns as long as the say JM Marlin on the barrel. The quality went to pot once Freedom Group/Remington bought them out.

My oldest two sons (15 and 13) and I love to set up little 22 competitions between the three of us. It's all fun, and they're pretty good shots, but when I pull out the 39, they just roll their eyes. It even makes my poor shooting look decent.

Anyone know if Marlin will be affected by the bankruptcy of Remington?

Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, you're allowed only a two hour block per day without being able to move from the rifle range to the pistol range, but you can use pistols on the rifle range. That said, minimum target setup is 15 yards out to 200. We set up at 15, 25 and 50. I'd like to get on the pistol range and set up at 7-10 yards and see what I can do.

Yes, my Henry is a Frontier .22. One of the guys brought his fresh-outta-the-box Henry Big Boy Classic .357. I've never shot a 99 so I can't compare it to the Henry. I will say the Frontier is now smooth as silk, now that it's been worked a bit. Didn't take long, though. The Big Boy is still a bit stiff, but I have no doubt it'll turn out just as silky smooth. Neither one had any argument feeding shells and both are super fun to shoot. Just something about working a lever action!

How far are you from Lebanon, ME? Maybe I'll bring my gear next time I get up that way and we can get together for a little shooting fun.

I really don't know, but they can't get much worse than they already are. Remington really messed up Marlin bad when they bought them out.

I really love old JM Marlins, so that's what I focus on. But if I were going to go buy a new centerfire lever action I'd probably go with Henry.

Thanks. It's not the older collectable savage, but it's a shooter. Haven't fired any ammo from it but will soon then I'll see how it groups.
