It flairs on both sides as the metal meets the wood.

And yes, it tapers in thickness from the tang to the tip where it's thinnest at the tip!

very slick looking knife there Scott....I do not think it is a bread knife though, those are usually serrated, looks to me more like a slicer, for slicing cooked meat like prime rib, brisket, roast beef, ham, etc...the length of the blade enable you to make long pull and push cuts while applying minimal downward pressure, and allowing the blade to do the work of giving you nice even (and thin if desired) slices....just my humble opinion.

Great day for you Bug - cool finds. I had one of those Vitt-L-Kits when I was a Boy Scout, and the mess kit too - all long gone to a collectibles shop (or lost in the woods) after me and then my three younger brothers used them up. OH

Nice haul bug you really did good. I used an anvil identical to yours as a work knife around 1980. I lost it on the job after couple of years. The hatchet would be a keeper for me since I don't have anything Marbles.

Nice snags Josh! I have two sets of the scout utensils but that's the first I have seen the original box, very cool!

Nice vittle-kit bug......there's a whole genre of Scout collectors that collect only chow sets.

Nice Anvil Josh...I have one like it that used to belong to a great uncle, who was ironically enough, a blacksmith! No need to get yer feathers ruffled over a lack of responses Bug, you oughta know we love ya and value your contributions around here! Just sometimes I only have a chance to sneak a peek at the site and don't always have the time to comment on all the awesome knives posted...doesn't mean they aren't appreciated though!
So keep those posts and pics comin'!

As for me, I got this crusty ol ' Case in yesterday...I am thinking a respectable knife lies under the years of accumulated crud...we shall see!

Bug you gotta give us a chance to get home from work and get the yard mowed and the garden weeded . It's turning summer and the traffic always slows down here on the site when the weather warms up.

I particularly like the hatchet and that Anvil knife. I've had one of the Anvil knives in the distant past and as I recall it had some very decent steel.

Bug, as I remember (hopefully correctly) from Bonfire Bob's writings, that Anvil was a collaboration design between Colonial Cutlery and the engineering students at a local university.

Mike, I bought one of those old Case SAB jacks a few years ago; heavy duty, stoutly constructed, and "Alligator" snap - the Sherman Tank of pocketknives! OH
