Got this one in. I guess I’ve never had this pattern before. I’ve had Cuttin Horse knives and it’s my favorite pattern of all patterns. But this knife is so big that I thought it was one of those big display knives, but it isn’t. Never had a Sowbelly this large before, 4 5/8” closed OAL. Hen and Rooster Master Cuttin Horse with some gorgeous stag, Nice deep bark on the front that reaches the bolsters in spots and on the back thick popcorn stag that also reaches the bolsters. Very unique stag.

Here's an old Western I bought recently, for cheap.

A good work knife for sure. It even has decent edges but I need to sharpen it. 4" closed.
Only one tang is stamped; probably later in their production. ?

Nice one, Joe! I picked up a Western at a flea market recently, and it seems to be a darned good knife.

Thought I would wake up this thread, one of my favorites. Got in 3 sets of 1978 Stag Case red blade etched knives in my store. These two stockmans really stood out for having some pretty nice stag. Being Case they don’t have bark remaining right to the bolsters, very rare to find that with Case knives, but these look pretty nice, especially on the pile sides.

Mark, although Case has always hafted covers to be the same thickness as the bolsters, you’ll find that older Case pocket knives, prior to mid 1960s or thereabouts, often have stag with “bark” from bolster to bolster. When thick stag covers became popular with collectors for some reason, Case started putting it on their knives, sometimes to the point of ludicrously IMHO. Which meant when they had to haft the covers down at each end to match the thickness of the bolsters, they were consistently removing the bark texture.

I cringe when I see eBay descriptions touting the knife has “nice thick stag”. (An oxymoron in my opinion). Since Case probably has made more stag knives than anyone, and there’s not as many of those older ones around, those having the stag hafted away near the bolsters are the ones most often seen.

Amen to that Ken, I cringe too!
I don’t deal in the older Case knives so I am only familiar with the 70’s and later and you will be hard pressed to find a stag Case knife with bark from bolster to bolster. I avoid older knives because I’m not great at spotting fakes, although I am getting better at it after reading what many here have pointed out over the years.

Just got the 32 3 dot 1977 pattern in mail today. Has pinned shield was happy with that. Don’t buy many case made after 1975 but couldn’t resist another 32 pattern. The other 3 stockman I got in the last few months. 18, 47, and 92 pattern.

Got these two in recently for the store. Just gorgeous both of them. This reverse gunstock Schatt and Morgan with Winterbottom bone is right near the top of the list for best looking stockman’s in my book. The stag on the Colonel Coon by Queen is pretty nice too.

The Col. Coon looks very fine. However, the S&M is singular, a standout.

Thanks bud. Nice of you to mention. Appreciate the feedback. Those two you posted are gorgeous. Loooooooooooooove the stag for sure, and that Queen Winterbottom bone is really growing on me. Loooooooooooooooooove the grooves and the contrast in colors, and the tan/browns on the edges with that blackened interior. Bravo, you snag some great stuff. Always love your posts and taste in knives.

Thank you Garry and Iman. It’s funny how my tastes have changed. When I first saw a Winterbottom bone knife made by Case, I didn’t like it. But then I found Winterbottom made by Queen and loved it. No comparisons between what Case calls Winterbottom and what Queen did, Queen comes out on top every time. Of course this was a looong time ago.
