This may seem like an odd matching pair - a modern Northwoods Presidential paired with a 70+ year old Case Tested XX 06294. They have a lot in common: same size (4 1/4"), same frame type (equal end grooved bolsters), and spear master.

Good eye for spotting the similarities between those two beautiful knives from different makers and different eras. I guess it just proves that good traditional patterns are "traditional" for a reason. Good design never goes out of style.

Sweet pair RalphAlsip. Beautiful. Wow is all I can say. Incredible pair of knives, thanks for sharing, otherwise I would never see stuff like that old Case. And to me this screams the whole reason there is a GEC (or a Northwoods) is because Case quit making this kind of knife and left the door wide open for GEC to fill the niche. They did, and Northwoods is riding the same wave. Make a great knife like Case did a hundred years ago and they will sell. Guaranteed. My #15 Boys knife is the spitting image of my '65-69 Case 6235 1/2 Jack that Case doesn't make anymore. Almost the same frame and design. There are several copies of old patterns out there, more than coincidence could explain away.

I agree 1000% with both of you and was thinking the same thing as I was writing the post and uploading the pictures. Old Case knives are represented most in my collection followed by Remington. GEC / Northwoods comes in third.

Jerry your Northwoods I believe was made by Queen.GEC doesn't make a 4 1/4" cigar.Their cigar is 4 1/8".

Roger, I agree it does more resemble a Queen, but if you read Derrick B's description for the Northwoods Presidential he states that it was made by GEC.

How old is that knife? When we made our Kansas Cane Cutter a few months back GEC had no tooling for a 4 1/4" knife.

Roger, I believe the Presidential was produced in 2014. I re-measured the knife with my caliper instead of my 19 cent plastic ruler. I've had the caliper for a couple years and this is the first time that I actually measured something. ::facepalm:: Anyway, it turns out the Northwoods Presidential is 4 3/32" so not quite 4 1/8".

Now I know why my original Kansas Kane Kutter looks bigger than the fabulous recent model.

Since the Kansas Cane Cutter was mentioned regarding the GEC large cigar equal end frame... Here are pictures comparing the Northwoods Presidential and the recently released Maher & Grosh Kansas Cane Cutter. For good measure, an original Maher & Grosh Kansas Cane Cutter is also included. It's obvious the Northwoods Presidential and the recent M&G Kansas Cane Cutter are on the same frame. The only difference I see is the flat bolsters on the Presidential. I'm guessing the frame is either the GEC #53 or GEC #54. The original M&G Cane Cutter is noticeably larger in all dimensions.

Another great look at it. Sweet knife, thanks for the look. Check out the #98 Texas Camp Knife. Frame #98. Looks just like this one with the flat bolsters, the single fluted, the equal end. I'm betting it's a #98.

The 98 frame is 4 7/8".

The M&G Cane Cutter was produced at the tail end of a run of GEC #54s, so it's a safe bet that it's also a #54. If I had to guess, I'd say the Northwoods is the same frame.

Thanks, RA.

I used to collect white MOP until I discovered that I like the smoky black pearl better. Perhaps that's some kind of indication of a tendency towards "the dark side", I don't know. But I do know that the black pearl really speaks to me...I can't get enough. Here are a few more black pearls from my vault.
