Very nice!!! For a brand that mostly cost between $15 to $30 I'm really liking the RR's more and more.

I wish RR would bring back some of the oldies like kootenay joe has.
I"m a rather late bloomer on RR, only been collecting some for 2-3 years now.

I've collected enough now that I needed to have a display shelf just for Rough Ryders.
I love the Barlow style knife and someday I hope to have a wall display box full of
different RR Barlows.

David, what a GREAT display ! They are in a glass cabinet so no need to dust and the mirror at the back allows you to see both sides of the knives.
One of the most attractive knife displays i have seen.

Thank you Sir, I'm kind of proud of all my displays. I have a couple of g'kids that come over and just stare into the cabinets with big eyes like they were looking at treasures at a museum. When I show them the knives I have in my antique jewelers cabinet there is something very mysterious about them because they are hidden in those little drawers. Makes me laugh every time.

The Rough Ryder VG-10 Trapper ($19.99 at Smokey Mountain) is a thoroughly modern take on a traditional slipjoint pattern. It features brushed satin finished VG-10 blades with half stops and match strike pulls. It has black and blue aluminum handles with stainless steel backsprings, liners, and screws. It's 3.45" closed and weighs 2.4 ounces. Razor sharp out of the box, and would make a great edc. However, it seems quit happy and visually appealing within my display case. I strongly suggest to my fellow R. R. collectors to obtain one. (or two)

This "Mini Trapper" Model #2101 is my first knife (that I know of) that has VG-10 steel. After seeing how excellent this knife is, I believe I will also purchase the Rough Ryder VG-10 "Stockman" Model # RR2102 which sells for $21.99 at SMKW.
I do not have a single negative thing to say about this Rough Rider Mini Trapper and I doubt that any other VG-10 bladed knife can be found for $19.99.

When I first began collecting knives many years ago, I paid little attention to the type of steel I was getting. I was more interested in the different designs and functions of these knives. As I collected more and more knives though, I began to realize that there is a lot to learn about the steel that blades are made of.
Knives use so many different types of steel. If you’re unaware of these, I really recommend you get into it. It’s all very exciting, just as exciting as learning about different types of knives.
Every type of steel has its own wonderful characteristics. And it’s so fulfilling to know what makes them different and what makes them special.
However, I do not let steel type or steel quality make the decision as to my purchasing a pocket knife, as I am a "collector."

With all its qualities, and being such a high quality steel I would believe it is difficult to sharpen. But through my research of VG-10, I have found out that there is no difference between this gold-standard steel and others. So yes, VG-10 steel is very easy to sharpen; just sharpen it like you would any other knife.

VG-10 steel is harder than most stainless steel types. The cutting characteristics are very good and VG-10 is easy to sharpen razor sharp. The rust resistance is overall good, but VG-10 steel is more sensitive to pit corrosion than steel types with lower carbon content.
VG-10 is a cutlery grade stainless steel originally produced in Japan. The name stands for V Gold 10 ("gold" meaning quality). It is a stainless steel with a high carbon content containing 1% Carbon, 15% Chromium, 1% Molybdenum, 0.2% Vanadium, 1.5% Cobalt, and 0.5% Manganese.

The VG-10 stainless steel was originally designed by Takefu Special Steel Co. Ltd., based in Takefu, Fukui Prefecture, Japan (the former cutlery/sword-making center of Echizen). Takefu also made another version: VG10W, which contains 0.4% tungsten. In the past, almost all VG-10 steel knife blades were manufactured in Japan.

VG-10 was originally aimed at Japanese chefs, but also found its way into sports cutlery. Just to name a few: Spyderco, Boker and Kizer have also produced some of their most popular models from VG-10. Fällkniven AB, a Sweden-based manufacturer of knives uses laminated VG-10 in many of their knives.

If you have a lot of cooking knives, you may have a VG-10 blade in your collection. This is because VG-10 blades are one of the best and most common around the kitchen.
You usually find VG-10 in some of the best kitchen knives your money can buy.

VG-10 steel is only slightly magnetic, there is magnetic attraction, but too weak to hold the knife in place, as it slides slowly downward.

I give praise to Rough Rider for entering into 2020 with a step into the future. Well done.

Thanks for the interesting input on steels OF. It has been interesting to watch the developments in steel. When I first started paying attention, ATS-34 was popular even among custom knife makers. Now I hardly find a mention of it, tho google tells me both Strider and Busse are using it.

I am very much of the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix' kind of person and whatever steel/heat treatment they use for the Traditional style Rough Riders works very well for me. The blades edge hold longer than expected, great edge holding.
VG10 by specifications should edge hold longer, but does it ?
I'll have to buy one and see for myself.

I'm looking for a Rough Ryder 2038 Micarta Work Knife with a wharncliffe blade.

I just found this at the bottom of my knife box. I forgot I had it!! Rough Rider Turkey Hunter Trapper. It has a choke tube wrench made into it.

Neat. Looks like an early RR, maybe from about 12 years ago ?

The Large Work Knife aka Sodbuster with a liner lock, is a really solid heavy use knife at not a whole lot of cash. Most have only been about ten dollars. I paid 12 locally 2-3 years ago. I've used it really hard.

Here is a better picture of the Turkey Hunter Trapper. KJ you could be correct on it's age. I can't remember when I purchased it.

I found another Trapper!! Rough Ryder Jigged bone razor. Maybe I have too many knives.

Jerry, I think you are trying to tell me there is no such thing as too many knives. So I guess the best thing for me is to keep on buying!
I will just have to keep better track of what I have squirreled away.

I've never had a RR, but I've read a lot about them. I sent off for 2 that looked pretty good to me. They seem to have a better eye for what makes a good looking knife than some of the big companies. I know these are inexpensive, but I don't think I'd call them "cheap" necessarily. The finish quality of what you get seems like rolling the dice, but so far (my only 2) it isn't bad.
These are the 2 I got, the congress has a tiny crack under a rivet but an ok knife, a good size and I'm a big fan of half stops. It's fairly nice, but doesn't compare to my Boker. I like the combination of blades on it and larger size.
The other I'm really impressed with. It had a fair amount of junk in it, possibly from the blade treatment, I don't know, and what looked like a tiny spot of rust on the base of the blade, which is gone now. Still it's a really nice stockman and a looker with that black and copper IMO. Snap isn't bad, but they're each a little different feeling. I can't get over how good looking it is. I wish a few certain other companies would do something like this, but not for $100+ they charge for something more aesthetically pleasing than their usual offerings.
These were $30 total, including shipping. Might not be prestigious, but a very good deal to me and some handsome knives for EDC.

Can't go wrong with Rough Riders. I have a few, been collecting them for more than 2 years now. Missed some of the earlier ones I wish I had.
However, RR is always coming out with new models. Very affordable for gifting also.
https://www.smkw.com/ has many and provide many of their newer listings often. Never had to return one yet.
I also like "half stops", I find them easier to oil and clean.
