Just picked up the same model(middle knife)at a flea mkt yesterday,either they made alot of them or I just got luckey.Always liked the bone style and easy open cut out.

Found this Camillus #32 Fish knife this afternoon, essentially new, less the packaging. Big knife at 5", stainless steel with ivory or cream colored Delrin handles.

This arrived from fleabay yesterday.

JerryD. sent me an email on this knife as a possible candidate for a repair to make a nice Camillus #72 since he had spotted the fact that it is missing the small clip blade. He thought I might be interested................I was.

The seller had it listed as a 2 blade knife.

Jerry sent him an email through fleabay that it was supposed to have 3 blades. The seller looked and said he could see where the blade had been. He even edited his listing to reflect Jerry’s info! There are still a few honest sellers on fleabay.

I picked it up for about $12.50 & free shipping. There was only one bid beside me.

When the knife arrived I was impressed. The 2 blades have excellent snap. The master blade has the best snap of any #72 master blade I own, & I have several!
Someone, long ago from the looks of it, had nicely finished off the knife after the blade had broken & made a spacer for the end of the knife where the blade had been. If I had not known that it was supposed to have 3 blades, I would probably missed the spacer; that is how well it is made.

Since I am very fond of the Rogers bone handles and of 2-bladed jacks, I decided to keep it for now as a user. I have been carrying it for the last 2 days.
So far my opinion of it is: SWEET!!!

I added a couple pics of the end so you can see the spacer.

The spacer takes up the space normally occupied by the blade tang as well as the normally empty space out to the edge bolster where the blade would travel.

It was done so well, I almost believe it was modified at the factory.
What do y’all think?

Looks like an excellent user! Any chance they put the broken blade in the open position and ground it down flush with the liners, then finished it off nicely? I did that with an 8OT I got at a flea market a few years ago. Basically used the broken blade for the spacer.

If I only knew then what I know now. All that and bone handles too. Camillus should have made one like that on purpose. Wow! Kinda sorry now I didn't grab that one myself but I had visions of the broken stub of the coping blade and that's just ugly on a knife.

Looks like the modification has a good bit of age on it. Maybe in the late '40s shortly after the knife left the factory. Excellent job, whoever did it. Great grab Dale!

dale, i posted a thread about this knife when i first saw it on ebay-i figued there was just a broken off blade in it-if i had known it was finished off like this, i would have bid on it-jerry contacted the seller about the missing blade. i've got 36 of these, and that's the best-looking bone i've seen on one!!-congrats!!!!....................

Camillus #12 - I believe these are what you guys refer to as green bone, but I could be wrong. The scales are in fantastic shape, frame is solid, and the blades are 90% there...... BUT the main blade is sloppy / lazy

I can't win, find a nice knife w/ great bone scales, and the blades are messed up.... find one with great blades, the scales are toast !

Great observation! You are right Rob that appears to be exactly what he did.
When you suggested it I decided to look at the tang of the coping blade when in the open position.

I thought the spacer in it looked different than the tang of the coping blade, but when I checked it is the same as another #72 of the same age with Rogers bone. The newer ones have a round end on the tang, which is what I was expecting to see, but those old ones have a square end to the tang.

I need to be more observant.

That's a beauty jammer! Might be one worth lookin' into a blade replacement or tig welding to put some life back into it. Like I said, ya just gotta love the old bone and steel!!

Hey Dale, we all have our moments.
I've got a 72 that has a busted primary, I was thinking about turning it into what would basically be a 2-blade tuxedo pen knife. It also has the old bone handles and federal shield.

That is a beauty! I think that is a pre 4-line tang stamp.
It probably dates to the 1920s but it could be before that.
I am still learning about the earlier Camillus tang stamps.
I have not been able to find many truly authoritative sources on the earlier stamps.
I hope someday we will have a better understanding of them.

That is one explanation that is probably as good as any. However, when I was a kid my folks were friends with a couple; he had been a POW at the infamous German Stalag 13. He showed my dad & I a picture frame with two small wallet size school photos of his children & said he had made the frame while in the POW camp. Dad asked him how had he made it. He answered that he had whittled it with his pocketknife. Dad was surprised and asked, “They let you have a pocket knife?” He answered that yes, they could have pocketknives and lighters, but if they were too fancy the German guards would take them for themselves.

Another POW in Germany who worked for me for several years said when he was captured he had a Ronson lighter and a Zippo. The Germans took the Ronson and let him keep the Zippo. Even in the 1980s he was laughing about it; he said the Ronson never did work right; it was rare when it would light, but he said the Zippo never failed. He still carried the Zippo 40+ years later when he worked for me.

The Germans may have thought that your knife was too nice for a POW and took it for themselves.
Whoever had it didn’t use it a lot!
