I've always preferred the beefier sheepsfoot blade of a stockman than the coping blade of a whittler in a medium frame knife, but have managed to keep a couple really exceptional ones ... a 6380 and a 6347 Select. THe tapered backspring and resulting thin feel of whittlers is a big advantage for me ...

I'm really enjoying the whittlers ya'll are posting.

Here is the most slender Whittler i have, a 3 1/4" silver Mappin & Webb Trustworthy from early 1900's. Mappin & Webb was in the same league as Jos. Rodgers during the Sheffield era. The Hallmarks show: sterling silver, from Sheffield in 1909. V. neat knife.

I picked up this unusual MOP whittler for a few bucks over the weekend at a local antique mall. Tang stamp is "J. Pritzlaff Hdwco. Milwaukee". The layout is traditional whittler with three blades, plus it has an additional file blade/tool on the back, lobster style. The MOP has a damaged area, but it is still a usuable knife. Is the tool for fingernail maintenance?

My Camillus 1047 & 72 whittlers.

Old Cutler, I'm not an Oyster guy, but isn't that a tool to use on those shellfish? Just assumed, you know what that can mean.

It clearly appears to have two back springs separated by a wedge-shaped spacer. So it’s a conventional construction for a “whittler” pattern, and what has become generally called “split backspring”. However to me anyway, a “true split backspring” means it is made from a single spring, having a wedge divider splitting it on only one end. The other end remains one undivided piece.

Ivoryman, that GEC looks stout! I’ve start whittling a bit, but the only real whittler pattern i have is a little Schrade Cut Co. And I don’t want to tear it up so I save it for the detail work and use a Camillus electricians knife for the initial shaping.

Beautiful scales on that Schrade! Love the patina of the blades.
