All About Pocket Knives

Here are a couple of Bear & Son Peanuts. I have tried hard to like Bear, because Bear knives are made in my state and I like to support businesses here.

These are single blade knives. The walk and talk on both knives is just about perfect. The fit and finish on the metal parts of the knife is very good, except for the blades. On both knives the blades have a curve instead of being straight. I do not think it would affect use, or display, but it does bother me.

Case peanuts are my favourite, the Queens is well made but basically a RR

Here is a Fight'n Rooster Peanut. I hesitated to buy this one because I assume that the handle is celluloid. But ... I really like Fight'n Rooster.

I have always liked the Anvil knives with the serpentine contour on the handle and the anvil shield. This one is not in real good shape, but still a decent knife.

I just happen to have a peanut sitting right next to me. Might as well post a picture. I think this is Bermuda Green bone.

Thank you, Mel. There is a casual story behind how I acquired it.

Several years ago, I took a day trip to Grand Prairie Knives and the wife stayed home. I wasn’t shopping for a Peanut and my wife knew that.

After I picked out the knife I wanted and started to pay for it, the clerk said “hang on, this also belongs to you” and he handed me this Peanut. While I was driving down there, my wife had called and ordered it by phone and told the clerk what kind of t-shirt I was wearing so he would know who to give it to.

Rick - that is a nice story.

Here are a couple of shell handled knives. A Richlands from England, and an unbranded knife from Germany. I know that the Richlands is really a pen, not a peanut. But I like the cover on the Richlands. The Richlands is a case study in just how good some folks could make a shell handle look. And the German knife is a case study in just how bland others could make one look.

Here is an E C Simmons Peanut. It is another Frost Family knife (I think) made in China. Everything about this little knife is quite nice. Good walk and talk, good fit and finish. The stag is a bit thick on one side, but I am okay with that.

Mel, I believe you've gathered up all the Peanuts except one! Interesting all the different mfgrs you have in your pile. I'm sure I have several stuck back somewhere but I have one that has been irritating me now for about a week! This is it:

This one showed about a week ago, it came from an ebay seller, problem is I had paid for a PAL cattleman and the seller shipped the Case Peanut and has not responded to several emails.

I can see where that would be annoying.

I have one of those Case 6220 Peanuts and it is a well made knife. I have only two Case Peanuts: they are a bit expensive. Mine are Delrin handles, one looks identical to yours. I guess a Stag Case will eventually make it to my mailbox.

Here are a couple of 12OT Peanuts. The one made in the USA is a very nice looking and functioning knife. The one without a place of manufacture does not look as nice: the grind on the blade and the shape of the blade just seems crude to me. However, the walk and talk on that knife is slightly better than the USA knife. And so is the run up where the tang meets the backspring.

The blade on the newer knife is a bit shorter than it needs to be. I never like that.

One of my latest Peanuts is this old Case. Made in 1978 if I read the dots correctly. It was a bit beat up, so I modified it a bit. Everything about this knife seems top notch. The blade takes an edge really nicely, and the walk and talk are better than in my newer Case Peanuts. Case just needs to make a Wharncliffe Peanut!

This Camillus 21 just came in the mail. I don’t have a lot of Camillus knives nor do I have a lot of peanuts. So I was surprised when the saber grind on the master blade was only in the front side with the back of the blade ground flat.

I also have a Camillus 21 with the same kind of saber grind\flat grind. It is unusual. I have one other Peanut with the same grind: it is a Primble that was probably made by Boker.
