This is a display ( please excuse the quality of the pics it is late and my photography is not great even in the most ideal of times. ) that I have upstairs it is an old hardware store floor display case I use it for old boxes and I try to have at least one example of whatever boxes are there . In any event I have attached pics of four of the tang markings used by Ulster, Ellenville , Dwight Devine and sons, The older version of Ulster with the seriffs on the letters and the regular later plain Ulster ( This one however also has an Ulster shield. ). I also included a pic of a box. I have quite a few Ulsters if you look at the post regarding Schrade displays there is an Ulster version of an SW 25 display that I made an insert for those are all Ulsters and have some interesting patterns. The model vehicles on the top of the case are all models which came out of Schrade trucks and the stuffed specimen on the bottom is my ex wife no not really it actuallty is a prop used in the display of knives Schrade used when photographing various knife promotions with wildlife backrounds. I managed to get a few different of them from the factory. LT

Here is my latest Ulster a 3 3/8" Equal End Jack. Nice brown bone and excellent snap on both blades, just a bit of sharpening. Steel Liners and bolsters.

Nice jack, Paul. You always come up with some beautiful, desirable knives. You really must visit more often !!

old house we recently purchased while TRYING to sell our other house.

Yes Charlie, that is the house. It is a time capsule , still has the gasolier fixtures on the walls and very few upgrades in it's history.
We just upgraded the electrical and the heating system is less than ten years old. It has great "bones" but needs some TLC. But my wife and I could not pass on the opportunity to purchase it. I think my old jack knives will feel at home there.

Looks like a great house, Paul. A lot of the features I can see are similar, if not identical, to the house I grew up in, in Buffalo! I remember my mom and I taking turns sawing off the old gas pipes for those light fixtures (shudder). We used a hacksaw blade wrapped with a rag to reach into the wall, and took turns when our fingers turned numb; all to erase some history. Ideas were different in the 1950s.

Thanks Charlie, it is very rare to find a house that age with most of its original features still intact. I look forward to the weekends just to work on it.
It is in New York, Westchester County. Not very far from Ellenville, Ulster County. (to stay on thread)

I have an Ulster but I can't find it anywhere. It was rusted shut the last time I saw it years ago. Well, that's what happens to old knives I think. They rust away in peace.

This old Eureka is about the same age as Paul's house! Worn but cool nonetheless, maybe also like the house!! My first Eureka, from an old friend in Winsted.
Along with it, came this beautiful yet scary (celluloid )
Swell Center Jack. Some call it a Crown, but I'm sure Swell Center is correct. (the pic is mislabelled).

i like the octagonal bolster on the old swell center.

Me too, Johnnie. I often try to picture the person who finished a knife like that. Imagine what it takes to do the final shaping and polishing on the faceted bolsters at one end, and the step bolsters at the top!

Time to bring back the Ulster thread, just got this jack last weekwend. It's a nice gentleman's jack with pearl handles in nice shape and an extended spring on the pen blade.

Question: regarding tang stamps, is there a consensus as to which is the earlier between ULSTER/KNIFE CO/NY and ULSTER/KNIFE/CO? Reading threads, I haven't found any stated facts about this, and it isn't readily discernible just looking at a wide assortment of knives- though I seem to have gotten it in my head that ULSTER/KNIFE CO/NY is the earlier of the two. Perhaps they were used with some overlap?

Any ideas, anyone?

OK are a couple of Ulsters that I just picked up. These are my first Ulsters that I am going to keep. The jack has some of the salesman's ink still on it.

Mike, that Ulster jack is fantastic!!!!!

Where DO you keep coming up with such wonderful knives?!!!
