That looks superb!
The resin never does match perfectly, but I have not seen it done any better than yours. I believe you made a good decision in patching it rather than replacing it. For a knife with sentimental value, you want it to be as original as possible. You did not have to discard anything that was originally a part of his knife.
One technical question: what did you use to outline around the area where you are about to pour?
I normally use painter's tape, but in your picture it looks almost like clay.

Yes, because this was a large area to fill I used modeling clay to contain the pour. I degreased the entire area including the area where the clay was to sit, to be sure the Acra Glas would be contained and not leak at the edges. I used 2 drops of a red colorant made for coloring epoxies and clear acylics to get the color fairly close. It worked great. Thanks everyone for the comments.

I've used this product before on old plastics of various types to restore a sheen. Maybe it would work on acra glass?
