All About Pocket Knives

Here is an older Colonial with Champion Spark Plug advertisement - I remember this was our hose cutting knife in the auto parts store. Any idea how to clean this up without damaging the decal?

This advertising pocket knife arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I bought. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. This particular advertising pocket knife was NOT the reason for my purchase. However, it did end up being added to my general, pocket knife accumulation. It is an UNBRANDED, two blades, 3" closed (it is missing the bail), two springs, advertising, pocket knife. If this pocket knife ever had a tang stamp(s) or any marking(s) at all, it doesn't now. The shield says, "CENTRAL SHOE - COMPANY" The main blade has a CRISP half stop, with a good opening and closing snap. The secondary blade has a VERY CRISP half stop and a VERY NASTY opening and closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in GOOD condition. Some cleaning was required. I took some pictures and here it is.

Some time ago, this advertising, multi tool pocket knife and nails clipper set, arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I had purchased. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. This particular advertising pocket knife and nails clipper set, was NOT the reason for my purchase. However, it did end up being added to my general, pocket knife accumulation. It is a BASSETT, one blade, two tools (a cap lifter or bottle opener and a file), three tang stamps, 2 3/8" closed, advertising, multi tool, pocket knife. There is also a separate nails clipper included and it also has a stamp. The main blade front tang stamp, what I can see, says "PAT. (over) 2779098" The cap lifter or bottle opener, front tang stamp says, "BASSETT (over) MADE IN U.S.A. (over) PATENTED" The file, front tang stamp says "PAT'D" The nails clipper stamp says, "BASSETT (over) U.S.A. (over) 5" The blade, the tools and the nails clipper are ALL contained in a well worn, but still in GOOD condition, leather case. The advertising is on the back of the case and it is almost completely worn off. The words and letters that I can still make out and read are, "VALLEY - ?RRIES - TRANSIT - M? It might actually say, "VALLEY - QUARRIES - TRANSIT - MIX" Overall, this pocket knife and nail clipper set is in GOOD condition. Some very minor cleaning was required. I took some pictures and here it is.

The cap lifter or bottle opener front tang stamp says, "BASSETT (over) U.S.A. 82" The file front tang stamp says, "BASSETT" The blade, the tools and the nails clipper, if the nails clipper was present, are ALL contained in a VERY GOOD condition, vinyl case. The advertising is on the inside flap of the case and says, "Fromm - READING - Tel. 215-374-4441" and has a logo or symbol. The blade and the tools ALL open and close as designed, with NO issues. Even with the nails clipper missing, this pocket knife and nail clipper set is in VERY GOOD condition. Some very minor cleaning was required. I took some pictures and here it is.

The main blade, as far as I can tell, has NO tang stamp(s) at all. The cap lifter or bottle opener front tang stamp says, "U.S.A." This multi tool pocket knife is contained in an EXCELLENT condition, 2 5/8" closed, vinyl case. It can be removed from the case. There is NO advertising at all on the pocket knife itself. The advertising is on the outside of the top flap of the vinyl case and says, "FIDELITY BANK - OKLAHOMA CITY" The blade and the tool BOTH open and close as designed, with NO issues. This advertising, multi tool pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. Some VERY minor cleaning was required. I took some pictures and here it is.

Here are two old whiskey advertising knives from Sheffield. They both came from a New Jersey collection auctioned off last year. The first is by C. Ibberson & Co. for Johnnie Walker, born 1820 still going strong. The second is by John Watts for King George IV Whiskey. They both have really cool tang stamps.

However, it did turn out to be a keeper and it did end up being added to my general, advertising, pocket knife accumulation. It is a U.S.A., two blades, one tang stamp, 3 1/2" closed, two springs, tipped bolsters, advertising, pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "U.S.A." The main handle side says, "Ford" (written) and has the image of a Ford automobile. The main blade has a SOFT half stop, a SOFT opening snap and NO closing snap. The secondary blade also has a SOFT half stop, a SOFT opening snap and NO closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in EXCELLENT condition. Absolutely NO cleaning was required. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

Not too recently, this advertising, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife arrived in a lot or group of pocket knives that I had purchased. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. I did NOT buy the group or lot to obtain this particular pocket knife. However, it did turn out to be a keeper and it did get added to my general, advertising, pocket knife accumulation. It is an Ambassador, one blade, one tang stamp, 1 11/16" closed (not including the ring or loop), advertising, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "Ambassador (over) U.S.A." The main handle side says, "KOSEL'S TAVERN - 247 Washington Ave., CArteret 1-9680" This pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. It needed very little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

The following advertising, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knives, were among various groups or lots of pocket knives that I have purchased over the last couple of years. They now become my latest examples to be posted under this topic or thread. Not one of these pocket knives was the actual target of, or reason for, my purchase. They are however, in good enough condition to join my general, advertising, pocket knife accumulation. They are NOT in any particular order.

ALL of the main blade front tang stamps say "U.S.A." ALL of the blades have a good half stop and a good opening and closing snap. ALL of these pocket knives are in VERY GOOD condition.

Interesting little group of knives, Skip. I am partial to the Funk's, their signs were in nearly every cornfield around when I was growing up.

Love old advertising knives and the stories they tell. Who was the maker for the Benedictine bartender's knife?

I saw that knife advertising paraquat and it reminded me of the government program 50 years ago where the U.S. tried to eradicate marijuana fields in Mexico by spraying them with paraquat.

Yeah Ike, that put the horrors into a lot of hippies too!
The B & B is a Camco with the cap-lifter blade, kind of a mini bartender's knife. 2-7/8" closed. J.O'.

Yeah, it is more than a little ironic that our government spent who knows how many millions of $'s fighting the marijuana trade within our own borders as well as Central America, and look where we are now. We sanction marijuana farming just so the powers that be can get a portion of the profits, and many of those same growers are 1st or 2nd generation citizens originally from the Central american region and Mexico.

Here are a couple. The Mumm has "Cordon Rouge" on the pile side, not sure of the maker. The tang stamp is G H Mumm, but I wouldn't think that a French Champagne company also made knives.

The Pittsburgh Brewing is a W H Morley with the 4 leaf clover stamp. According to Goins this was a Kastor import.
