All About Pocket Knives

I found three more at the bottom of the safe where I don't get to very often. The black one is unmarked and I forgot to write down the makers of the other two before I locked them up again. I need a better system to store them that is more accessible. ___Dave

Thanks QS. The Scandinavian designs are pretty much unique to their part of the world and they take their knives very seriously. Most don't have a lot of frill but some of the dress knives, as part of their costumes do get pretty fancy. Swedish steel for years has been among the best in the world and the humble little Mora knives with the red birch handles were laminated blades for years. I grew up in an area with a lot of Swedes, Norwegians, and Finns and for some time didn't realize that the rest of the world didn't recognize these designs. Levine once stated that the Swedish Barrel knives were extremely rare which surprised us knife guys around here because they aren't around here. It wasn't too many years ago the local church we attend finally had our church constitution changed from Swedish to English when the last member who could read Swedish passed away.____Dave

The 6 bladed Knifbolaget has horn handles for all I can see. I don't think I have one like your but will check when I get home. Will also check my "bible" for info on it.

Will also check your pics on a large screen to see what I can make of them.

Dave, here´s some are info about the folders you posted.

I have checked my book about Eskilstuna knives and your Knifbolaget was made before 1929 and has model number 116 if I have read it right.
They changed the tang stamp from Knif... to Knivbolaget Eskilstuna in 1929. They started out in 1917 and the first tang stamp was Knifbolaget and an E but it is uncertain when they changed to the second tang stamp.

Your Gnosjo knife is a well known knife and often reaches good prices here. It was made between late 50´s to late 70´s.

Thanks Jim. Great information. Scandinavian knives are fairly common around Northern Minnesota but information on them is a little hard to come by, or else it's written in Finnish or Swedish.____Dave

Have you ever see or read any of Les Ristinen's books on Scandinavian knives? He lives across the state from me and I see him a couple times a year. He sells them in your neck of the woods and travels back and forth once in a while. I have two of his books and I believe he may have written one in Swede or Finn. I hope I spelled his last name correctly.___Dave

Time to post a few new ones I just found.

First a small one from Emil Jonsson, a company active for only three years, between 1918 and 1921. Not sure what the handle scales are made of but I suppose stained horn?

Then a very worn one, the blade has been sharpened so much it´s hard to read. I think it is a Knivbolaget and one blade is marked with the model which is 114. Originally it was a 6 blade but one is missing unfortunately, just as almost all the colour on the handles. It has the crest of Sweden on it.
Last out for today is a MOP Emil Olsson, model 38 1/2. Good condition but I will have to clean it some more. Has the Hammesfahr patented cork screw.

Picked up this at an auction today This one is signed A Vitikka Rovaniemi. Can anyone give me any info on this knife?

Monte, I believe you have a classic Finnish design based on the blade and handle plus the sheath. This, as opposed to other Scandinavian countries. I am no expert but feel fairly confident about it.

I believe this is my one and only Eskilstuna. Very small - very well made.

The handle material is Mother of Pearl. It's more evident in hand.

Dave, I am doing fine now and I’m back for a visit.

I have some life changing health issues which means I had to quit my job after two unsuccessful surgeries. But it could be a lot worse.

All this made me decide to downsize on all my collections so I will sell some of what I have.


But I will continue to hang out here as much as I can muster.

I’m new to the forum and posted this in the General Q&A forum. Another member pointed me to this thread and it is right on target with a real odd ball “Sweden Patent” EKA I recently found. Does anyone have any clue about this knife’s intended use? I’ve never seen anything like it.

I hope someone comes along who can assist you. I just find it inexplicable that when the knife is folded the blade and point are exposed.

Same here. I'm wondering if perhaps part of it is missing.
