I really like those bolsters! That's one thing about knives that never gets old... there are so many different varieties & patterns.

You might get better color from your scanner if you use a background cloth or paper behind the knives.
I use a chamois behind mine, but I have used towels. Green cloth works well with some knives and even red with some knives. As you experiment with backgrounds you will find some work better than others and some colors work better with some handles. Bernard Levine recommends a manila envelop, IIRC.

Your Wards reminded me of one I have. Beautiful old knives.
Mine was covered with paint when I got it.

I did do some experimenting with that Imperial last night. The picture I posted is actually with a white paper background. It looks light gray, but I have lined an artist canvas with white paper. The wooden frame of the canvas keeps most of the unwanted light out of the scan.

I also thought it might be the paper color, so I changed it to blue. Not any better results though. I scanned a couple of other green celluloid knives to see if it would change the color of them. Some came out a little more yellow than they actually are, but none changed like that Imperial.

I had one more Imperial that has the same handle material. I took the scan with just the canvas behind it. It changed colors just like the first. Weird...

That Wm.Elliott is very cool. I also like that Wards.

I've been using a scanner (Epson Perfection) for about 10 years and I'm always trying to figure out new backgrounds. The white butcher paper does seem the best for not getting the shadows that appear with other lighter backgrounds.


The manila envelope works OK but seems rather bland. I've used a Filson canvas jacket because it's lighter in color and doesn't have a lot of folds.

With all the Spear Point main blades how could I have missed this pattern????

Don't have but one Jack (I-XL) but it's not EVEN a Dog Leg!

This is as close as I got I think.

I realized I don't have very many dog leg Jacks myself.
I made a quick tip to a flea market today and picked up 10 or 12 knives mostly cheapies for my $5 basket at the OKCA show in April. Most required some time cleaning as paint, rust, tar & grease add nothing to the value IMHO. (sorry Charlie).

I did pick up one dogleg in the bunch.
It is well used but not abused. The master blade has no snap but has plenty of friction so it could be a user.
The secondary blade has a half stop and snap that would make a bear trap blush.
I don't know anything about Cameron Knife Co, except what Goins & Levine say. Goins guesstimates them to be 1900-1920 & BRL4 dates it as "1920s?"

Any of you guys know any more about Cameron Knife Co?

Thanks! It must be some strange handle composition? The scanner just can't pick up any of the blue or green. The light must reflect off of it funny. It's the oddest thing...

Does your scanner have a series of multiple parallel fixed-position tube lights or a single light that moves with the scanner bar?
If a series of multiple fixed-position lights (that's what I think might be causing the multiple reflections on your knife scans), try positioning the knives 90 degrees from the way you've been doing it. In other words, lay the long axis of the knives parallel with the long axis of the lights and don't leave a master blade in a half-stop position.
Might work. Couldn't hurt.

My scanner has a single light that moves with the scanner bar. Bret just gave me it for Christmas, so it is brand new. I changed the positions of the knives for another scan, with the same result. I am going to read up in my scanner instructions later & see if there are any clues as to why this can happen..

OK. Does your scanner go through a process of "ADJUSTING LAMP"?

If not, try using a different scan mode.

Also try using a less reflective background. That latest scan above looks a lot better.

I took a plastic tray about the size of my scanner plate and cut it down to about 7/8" deep, then lined it with blue felt. Use a more neutral color, like tan. When I lay a knife on the plate and cover it with my tray, it traps the light inside.

The first few scans I did with the blue felt just wrapped around the scanner cover and secured with tape.

I think the upside down tray works better. Scanners were not really designed for 3-D objects. The scanner top was designed to lie flat over a sheet of paper stock and contain all the light under the lid.

Play around with it.

I love this pattern also, I don't have any old ones yet but this is my favorite.

Charlie your post gave me an idea.
I was on a trip to the craft shop for an X-acto saw & I saw a wooden tray about the size of my scanner & about 1" deep.
I bought it and lined the bottom with a leather chamois which I glues in place.
Now I set the box over my scanner & the background is far enough back that the the knife stands out better. Also no light gets in the sides and it is quicker to set the box over the knife than it is to lay a chamois over the knife.

Charlie, I'm not very researched in Robesons but, is the only difference between the two yellow handled dogleg Robesons you posted the cut out in the handle and frame for the nail nick on the one knife? That difference changes the pattern number by 1? All great looking Robesons you posted also. Thanks.
