I am going to Blade Show West next weekend. I will keep my eyes pealed for some more Hammers, especially an auto.

Hi, does anyone recognise the one in the middle of the 1st photo? The only mark is USA. Photo 2 shows two imperial knives similar to some shown earlier. If anyone collects these and would like them please let me know. They look very close to mint IMO. s-k

sorry...the brown handled onein 2nd photo is Colonial not Imperial. Looks like similar shell construction.

One thing I just learned ( SC505S are "Toothpicks" ? I never looked at them that way befor )

Hey there Ken,

The SC505 is a Stockman pattern...I believe we were just showing it as an example of "Ivory" Delrin with scrimshaw, versus those knives with celluloid handles. I don't remember it being referred to as a Toothpick pattern. There just seem to be a lot of Toothpicks in this thread.

I now officially know what a switchblade collector is.
Does anyone know can a shell handle be replaced or is the old shell removable without destroying it? Does anyone fabricate replacement shells?

Thanks Joe Mossdancer, it is possible to remove the handles, they just have a little tab on each end that folds over into the frame. I do not know of anyone making new ones.

Here are a few of my shell handles.
The ones on the left are Hammer Brands.
The ones on the right are Imperials.
Sorry for the poor scan. By the time I cut down the file size so it would post it lost a lot of the integrity of the picture.

Here is a miniature Hammer Brand. 2-1/4" closed. It has shell handles. The blades really walk & talk and have half stops. What is so impressive about this knife is that it has all the features of a big knife in a much smaller package.
The bluing of the main blade is a quirk of scanner.

Here is a celluloid handle Western States I picked up for $5 at a pawn shop a while back. The main blade is a bit used, but it is good carbon steel.

How often do we go into five pages around here? As we discuss mostly shell handles? Who cares, I am enjoying this. Love those switchblades!

As any of you know, Imperial used those shell handles, with the thin strip of celluloid on a lot of advertising knives. I am not sure the newer, more modern shell handles were actually cell, probably just a newer plastic. They just don't have the look of those earlier beautys. But here is my latest contribution, a salesman's sample case and the catalog that went with it. These are things, like the cardboard display things we show above, that adds to a collection.

Hi guys,

I love the shell handle knives. Mainly cause I can still afford them. While most don't consider these very valuable, they are important in knife history, and mint examples of some are becoming harder to find.

I have been into the Imperial line for awhile, and have taken a liking to certain styles. Here is a pic of my favorites. They are called Tu-Tone, and remind alot of people of the paint jobs on cars in the 50's. (All in the pic are Imperial, except the lower right, which is German-made.

Nice knives guys. Thanks for the pics. I loves the old cell wrap knives. I have never seen any of those tu-tone knives. I guess that gives me something else to look for now.

James' autos, Dale's ole users, Phil's saleman samples, Glen's Tu-tones and Schrade, WOW, they are all great looking.
