All About Pocket Knives

Thanks Dale, I have been nuts getting my house in order then my computer was hit with a virus, but I am back now and will be posting again. I've gotten some nice knives and boxes lately. I will be posting the boxes in my store in a few days.

The Beaver Falls Catalog came to me unexpected and I am really glad I was able to trade for it.

Here is something you might have seen before on this site but I think it belongs here.

Along with a Mint Schrade NY. 136, I was fortunate enough to snag these on Ebay from a very generous member here at AAPK.

Thought I'd revive this excellent thread with a little something I just came across; a NY Knife Company original patent for a James Fuller invention. It's a pocket clip that's attached to the knife via the blade pin (a narrow pin is actually threaded through the end rivet! ). Can't say as I've ever seen one of these in action, but then again I haven't really looked for them either. Note how it does preceed by just a few years the fall of that great institution:

Nice find Eric!

John Goin's gives the date of the ending of New York Knife as 1931.
If that is accurate, the patent could have been granted a few months before the closing of NYK.
Not knowing when NYK closed in 1931, I suppose it is possible that the patent was granted a few days or weeks before they closed.
Does anyone know the date NYK closed?

It is possible that they never made production with the pocket clip knife.
Wouldn't you like to find a prototypes?

It seems Mr. Fuller was 50 years ahead of his time!

Dale, you're right! For some reason I had in my head that they went out of business in 1933, but '31 it is. Actually Sept 15, 1930 was the beginning of the end, but it took a number of months for things to sink in. Isn't it ironic that the person who caused the company's demise also won a patent at the same time?

I've been saving this little greeting card just to wish all of my knifer friends a Merry Christmas !

There is no manufacturer or patent marked on it, but I think it's from about 1890 - 1910. It's only 3'' closed, so one has to wonder if it was meant to be mailed, or with a string through a grommet was a gift tag ? The nail nicks are not printed, but are punched through and functional.

Don't cut up rough with me
When this cute card you see,

But handle every blade
Serene and unafraid.

For nowhere will you find
One thrust or cut unkind.


May you, both sharp and bright,
At Christmas reap delight,

And prove in everything
True steel and full of spring.

Just an FYI, the great thing about knife ephemera is when you really know what ephemera is.


Ephemera: Materials, usually printed documents, created for a specific, limited purpose, and generally designed to be discarded after use. Examples include advertisements, tickets, brochures, and receipts.

for this reason you can see why a piece of paper or a box from 50 to 100 years ago is quite a find and one to be cherished in ones collection. They really weren't meant to be saved.

Somewhat like Keith's block from the previous page, I found a print from the block in an older Parker price guide (second knife down).
My wife is a print maker, and printed the black and white above. I'm sure it's the same block used in the guide.

I picked up a few new ones this past week. The Keen Kutter one is from a tobacco company and the offer expires 1900!!!! I am thinking that it was when Walden Knife Co made their knives?

The Utica billhead was sent to me by a dear friend who is always looking out for me. Thanks David!!! I have only seen 3 paper items from Utica Cutlery in the years I have been collecting. I am not sure why that is maybe I have not been in the right palce at the right time I guess.

I picked this one up years ago but never took a picture of it to post. Warwick Knife Company Workers 1908. Warwick made many knives for others and not many with there mark. Knives marked Warwick are few a far between in any condition.

Here is my latest addition of Cutlery Ephemera that was a gift from a very nice man and a good friend. Case Brothers Cutlery Little Valley NY.

Now all I need is a nice Case Brothers Knife to go with the Billhead and box that I own. I have been looking for a nice example for years but can't seem to find one in nice shape that I can afford.

The billhead is great though!!!!

I figured I would revive this thread with a Cattaraugus Want List card that I picked up. It has nothing on the back so it is not a post card. I think it went out with invoices or given out by a Salesman but am not sure.

I have not seen a thread on old catalogs, if there is I missed it. I really like finding them but they are hard to come by. I have a few and will start with an old Cattaraugus Catalog that has no date but I am pretty sure it is pre 1920.

Here is another but it is not paper but thought it might do well here. It is a Cattaraugus Cloth with some of the items they sold stated on it. 1920's or 30's is my guess.

This is a little Wostenholm brochure circa 1930.

I like it!! Here is another Cattaraugus one but later. 1930's maybe??

1. Original 1928 Boker Catalog.

2. Old H. Boker business card from the late 1800's or early 1900's. It's bigger than a standard business card measuring 4 & 5/16" inches wide by 3 & 1/16" inches tall.

3. Another old H. Boker business card. It has the year 1876 written on the back of it.

4. Old bone keychain. Most likely from the 60's or 70's.

5. Small (tie-tack size) pin.

6. H. Boker & Co's Cutlery Germany salesman's sample knife with original case from the 1933 - 1934 Chicago World's Fair.
