I mistakingly thought your permit was for a CCW permit. Never heard of a permit to buy every gun. In KY the U.S. Constitution is considered the "permit." One can carry concealed without any permit. There are background checks of course when buying a firearm.

Welcome to New Jersey, my little corner of the world.
At least it isn't as bad as some states.
California comes to mind when thinking about gun and knife laws.

Fortunately PA's laws regarding gun ownership generally enable a person so inclined to indulge in impulse buying. My latest example is a Beretta Model 81, used, from some Italian corrections facility according to the importer. This is almost mint. 32 ACP, 12 +1, one magazine, DA/SA, no decocker. Big for what it is but it is all steel and beautifully made. A pleasure to wrap your fingers around the grip. Picked it up yesterday after stopping at Cabela's to pick up some ammo. Went through a box of 50 without cleaning without a hiccup. Nice thing about the 32ACP, ammo is available. Not much of SD round but may better than throwing stones. I bought it for the fun of it. ::tu::

Steve99f, That is a very cool looking pistol. Would love to have it myself. While polymers are fine, given my druthers I'd always prefer steel. And Beretta has lasted as a weapons manufacturer for hundreds of years for a reason. They know what they are doing. As for the caliber, especially with the right ammo and shot placement, a.32 cal can be effective. After all, every year more people are killed by .22 caliber rounds than by every other caliber. So congratulations on a very interesting acquisition. ::tu::

I agree with all that Garry posted.
I've had folks challenge me on my wife's .22 as a SD weapon. They say it isn't effective, wont do this or that, blah blah blah...My response is, if it's so ineffective how about standing out there at 7 yards and seen what happens when the Crimson Trace lights up a spot on your chest, after all it's just a measly little 22. :)
And Steve you're right, a 32 sure beats throwing stones! ::tu::

Thanks for the positive reinforcement men!

I did pick up a box of JHP cartridges for the 81 but wanted to run a few of the cheaper rounds first. Kind of interesting comments on the web, jacketed HP do better on hits in the arms or legs, FMJ's penetrate better in gelatin tests. Either way, do not want to have to test these results ever.

These can be had for under 300 easy, just saying.

We had that same conversation. I told my sons I think I prefer hitting what I aim at with a smaller caliber (that I can afford to practice with )to missing 15 times with something that is not enjoyable or cost effective for me to shoot often. And speaking of stones I just found my wrist rocket slingshot

I had a similar conversation with a feller on a shotgun forum one time. We were talking about what we used for home defense and I mentioned I kept a 20 gauge pump beside the bed loaded with the same 1oz load of 6 shot that I hunted rabbits with. He proceeded to tell me all that would do would be to make a bad guy mad and get me killed. I gave him my reasons for not using buckshot, like over penetration with my kids in the house etc...but nope I was endangering my family by keeping such a weak load for home defense.

So I invited him to open my front door any time he wanted unannounced and we test out his theory on the effectiveness of 1oz of 6 shot at across the room range. He never again responded to that thread. Go figure.

I hear you Colonel. As back up I keep a double barrel 12 GA. by my bed. First off, I infinitely prefer 20.ga. In the days when I shot skeet I did much better with a 20 versus a 12. but there was no 20 at the gun show where I purchased the shotgun. A pump has much to recommend it as a defense gun. For shells I use #4 shot as there will be no danger to others.

People in general underestimate the danger of over-penetration. You are right to make that a major consideration. I was amazed a few weeks ago watching a video in which Massad Ayoob described the many cases of deaths of good people due to overpenetration. What starts off as a righteous shooting by police or civilians turns into a horror show when the bullet hits the intended miscreant but continues its journey down the street or through the wall.

Did someone mention 20GA. Yeah, another impulse buy. Colonel, I'm thinking that 4,5, or some #6 would not improve someone's day. With the ranges only now starting to open up, I need to take this out and practice with some target rounds to figure out how best to handle this.

I don't care if it's deer hunting, target shooting, skeet, trap, just plinking or God forbid, self defense , high powered rifle, shotgun or handgun, if a person is uncomfortable or scared of the particular weapon, they may not be effective with its' intended use. Recovering from recoil and being back on target is critical in any shooting situation.

I have a 12 and a 20 Mossberg Shockwave. They’re a hoot! I keep the 12 loaded with 1 1/4oz of 4 shot.

For hunting I carry either a 20 gauge or a 16 gauge that’s actually built on a 16 gauge frame and weighs the same as my 20’s. For me, they come up faster, swing better, and are plenty for quail, rabbits, doves, squirrels, and any other small game I’m after. No reason to carry a heavy cannon for what I hunt.

One other thing I forgot. If you think about it, OO Buck is roughly the same diameter as a 9mm bullet give or take a couple thousands. Stuff 9 of those into a shotshell and fire them at roughly .357 velocity and over penetration becomes a big deal. The last test I saw had OO Buck penetrating 20 some odd sheets of dry wall board. There’s no way I want to touch one of those off in the house where my wife or kids may be on the other side of the wall.

Since y'all are talking about shotguns, sometime in my mid-30s I bought a Winchester Mod. 1200 for home defense. I took it to my ex-brother-in-law who owned a machine shop in partnership with a buddy of his and had him whack the barrel off to 18.5". I kept it on the bed frame down between the box springs and the side rail.

Fast forward about ten years to when Linnea and I got together several years after my divorce and she was constantly pitching a fit about that shotgun being in the bed with us. Y'all know they can wear you down to the point where it's easier to capitulate than it is to listen to all that yammerin'. So I came to the conclusion that as soundly as I sleep, if someone came into the house while I was asleep, they could carry the bed and me out and drop me in the middle of the street and I wouldn't wake up so maybe it was ridiculous to keep that shotgun close at hand. So I took it to the basement and stuck it in my upright freezer gun cabinet. It wasn't a long time after that that my house was broken into and I was glad I had locked up the shotgun. Yeah, I missed the stuff they had stolen but at least I wasn't worried sick that they would go out and kill someone with my shotgun.

No, the choice was my shotgun in a handy location or listen to all that yammerin'. It was a fairly easy choice.

One of my favorite memories was my Grandpa Buck letting me drive the 69 LTD huntin car through the hay fields so he could shoot out the window with a 32 inch barrel model 12. That double ought through a full choke really rolled the coyotes. Also the LTD vacuum headlight covers were a necessity to Buck for badger hunting at night in the hay fields.
