We had that same conversation. I told my sons I think I prefer hitting what I aim at with a smaller caliber (that I can afford to practice with )to missing 15 times with something that is not enjoyable or cost effective for me to shoot often. They say it isn't effective, wont do this or that, blah blah blah...My response is, if it's so ineffective how about standing out there at 7 yards and seen what happens when the Crimson Trace lights up a spot on your chest, after all it's just a measly little 22.
And Steve you're right, a 32 sure beats throwing stones!

I had a similar conversation with a feller on a shotgun forum one time. We were talking about what we used for home defense and I mentioned I kept a 20 gauge pump beside the bed loaded with the same 1oz load of 6 shot that I hunted rabbits with. He proceeded to tell me all that would do would be to make a bad guy mad and get me killed. For hunting I carry either a 20 gauge or a 16 gauge that’s actually built on a 16 gauge frame and weighs the same as my 20’s. People in general underestimate the danger of over-penetration. You are right to make that a major consideration. I was amazed a few weeks ago watching a video in which Massad Ayoob described the many cases of deaths of good people due to overpenetration. What starts off as a righteous shooting by police or civilians turns into a horror show when the bullet hits the intended miscreant but continues its journey down the street or through the wall.
One other thing I forgot. If you think about it, OO Buck is roughly the same diameter as a 9mm bullet give or take a couple thousands. Stuff 9 of those into a shotshell and fire them at roughly .357 velocity and over penetration becomes a big deal. The last test I saw had OO Buck penetrating 20 some odd sheets of dry wall board. So I came to the conclusion that as soundly as I sleep, if someone came into the house while I was asleep, they could carry the bed and me out and drop me in the middle of the street and I wouldn't wake up so maybe it was ridiculous to keep that shotgun close at hand. So I took it to the basement and stuck it in my upright freezer gun cabinet. It wasn't a long time after that that my house was broken into and I was glad I had locked up the shotgun. Yeah, I missed the stuff they had stolen but at least I wasn't worried sick that they would go out and kill someone with my shotgun.
No, the choice was my shotgun in a handy location or listen to all that yammerin'.
