They came into being during WW I I, go to the search and put in Kingston and there is quite a bit of knowledge there. Several paragraphs down Dale Vincent give a story of how they came to be. Very interesting. ::handshake::

Wow! What am I seeing here, RR? That's cool. A screwdriver knife, a reworked version of a TL-29? Where's the cutty, pointy, sticky, part? :D

That's the way they built them in Winsted, CT. ::nod:: On the bottom edge, closer to the tang from the indent, it is sharp enough to slice Mandarin skins.

T-dog, not only do I appreciate your admiration for that BD, but I also enjoy your enthusiasm for it. Some purists contend that it is not right for a knife to be unused. But while I enjoy using knives, I think a finely crafted traditional knife represents a work of skill and beauty, to be admired for its own sake. The big dollar art knives are clearly artistic. But much of my collection I consider a lesser art perhaps, yet providing much appeal and enjoyment. Also, I think our knives can represent a vanishing era of hand manufacturing.
I suppose we could say that robots have skills, but will they ever have the creativity to create an object with soul, as does the human spirit?

::clapping:: Well said Q.S. !!! ::nod:: A few Years ago, I got into a bidding war on eBay over a Tuna Valley Elephant Toe! with mammoth ivory scales, ohhh it was a beautiful knife. If not a work of art, (I thought it was) then at the least it was an amazing work of skill and beauty. It came down to last seconds and BAM! I got out bid ::dang:: ... But if I had won the bidding... ::paranoid:: no way would I have used it... as you said, I think it represented a vanishing era of hand manufacturing. Something beautiful to pass on to the next generation of collectors and knife-nuts.

As for using a knife, ::hmm:: Maybe some people shouldn't be allowed... ::skeptic:: well I have found custom knives and other expensive knives (Boker, Case XX, Queen) at flea markets and pawn shops (I am sure most collectors have too) and to my horror, the blade had been sharpened on a grinder!!! ::dang:: ::dang:: ::facepalm:: ... I have found quite a few used Buck knives (60's tang stamps) that the owner thought needed to be touched up on a shop grinder ::skeptic:: :x ::td::

Todays EDC is one that I haven’t carried in awhile. K55 Mercator made by Otter-Messer. Made in the same factory in Germany for about 150 years. The knife is basically unchanged but recently they came out with a choice of stainless steel or Damascus blades, different metal handles such as brass or copper etc.
Many cheap copies are sold but this one is the original. Very thin, it lays flat in your pocket.

Kim, you shouldn't have to worry about losing that knife and if it fits your hand perfectly, why not?

Oscar, those are cool and every knife collection should have one. πŸ˜‰

Totally rolling the dice on today's EDC. 🀭
