All About Pocket Knives

Found this Canada Goose blade etched Four-dot Buck 110 in a pawnshop this week and bought it. Only got the knife, no packaging, so I don't know if it came with a sheath or in a wood display box. I'm thinking a distressed brown leather Buck sheath might work. OH

Now you look for the small Barlows But, as a word of advice, if given the choice always get the yellow version first. The small barlow is always a brighter yellow color. The black will show up eventually. These knives are copies of CC versions. I have seen the CC versions but do not own one. Since you really like CC, you might find the Camillus version model number and be on the lookout. A display of the CC versions and Buck version together would be great and exclusive to you alone. The small Buck Barlow is a CC copy also (and a SMKWs offer also). 300

This is the first photo of any variety small Barlow I've seen, and yes, that is one bright yellow handle, (especially when compared to the GD Barlow with "sorta" yellow handles). I'll probably buy the first one I see available no matter what the handle material is they are so scarce, (and costy), but I will endeavor to obtain a yellow one first. Finding a jigged bone version would be even better, but I have never seen one of those other than photos you posted. I also wasn't aware that Buck also made a Barlow, I thought all of them were made by CC. In recent months I have seen only one Camillus clone like you pictured, and of course I missed it; I will keep my eyes peeled for one of those too.
Did recently get what I think is a late '71 CC-made #301 Stockman with handle pins, ('71 because it had no spacers....I think that's what I gleaned from the database? Could be a '72-'74 though); see below with a later CC-made #301 sans pins. I'm pretty sure it is a CC-made version, as opposed to the SC-made version with handle pins. This knife doesn't have the distinctive grind over the nail pull like all SC-made blades have, (had).
I still need to find at least one version of the #315 Yachtsman, and a #321 Bird Knife to have a "basic set" of CC-made 300 Series knives, and I am actively hunting for any and all various versions, (thanks to you!). The attached catalog photo is the "basic set" I am trying to obtain, (only two to go).

First let me clear up any poor communication I made. Buck has never made a Barlow style knife in its factory. All of the ones I was talking about are old CC made knives. Even those last ones that were made in 2000. All of the Barlow style knives that say Buck on them are contract made knives by CC before shut-down. And they were all Special Orders from SMKW's. They ordered them from Buck as special (exclusive) orders and Buck contract with CC to make them for Buck to sell to SMKW's. You and I could have done the same thing back then if we would have had enough capital to invest. I still could get Buck to print 300Bucks on the main blade of a 303 if I were to order several thousand. (Ain't gonna happen).

The first model of a 301 made under contract by Buck, will be as the top knife pictured but will have NO model number anywhere on the knife. The second model made by CC contract will have all the little scale pins, long pull, etc. but WILL have the model number on the reverse tang of the main clip blade.

The 315 and 321 are around its all about the money, buyers want less and seller want more.

Watch for any white or yellow scale 315, any 321 with a late 80's BUCK shield, even if you don't want them you can make 20 Bucks reselling them to half a dozen people.

Thanks for the clarification on the barlows, I was gettin' confused!! .
Then the 301 I posted above is a second model as it does have the model number on the pile side, but still has the pins, (but NOT a Schrade-looking master blade).
I'm still learning. I refer to what I have of the database all the time, but there were so many small differences between the versions, (especially older versions), it's easy to make a mistake. I'm sure you know all the versions by sight, I still have to refer to the database, and even then it's not easy to determine which is which without having them in hand to compare. Getting better though, I have a couple of SC-made 303's, so I can recognize the differences between Camillus blades and Schrade, but I'm still trying to learn how to factor in the pins, spacers, etc, etc.
It's cool we have all that data though, we owe that to guys like you and bertl.
You are absolutely right about it all being about the money. Both #315 & #321 show up all the time, but finding a decent one at a price I can comfortably afford, (or justify), hasn't happened yet. One of these days I hope to replicate that catalog photo only with knives I've collected, (that IS gonna happen!!). The quest continues.

Back at ya Old Hunter, I enjoy this thread too. I'll be gifting a vintage CC-made Buck #307 to my son in law today, and am carrying a 1993 Buck 314 on my belt, so this is definitely a Buck Day for me as well as Christmas. Happy holidays to ya'all.

Nice one guardog. Only thing that keeps me from buying a Buck is that besides one blade on a China Buck trapper I couldn't get any other Buck I tried to cut paper.

I don't understand that JPD I get shaving sharp edges on all of my Buck knives from new ones to my first two dot 112 that I bought back in 1974

It did indeed OH, then it went immediately into his pocket. I had given him an Old Timer Folding Hunter with a sheath last year, but his employer wouldn't allow him to carry that one at work. This one fits his pocket, so now he can always have a blade on him, (or in the 307's case, three blades). Best part is it will eventually go to my grandson, so it will be reunited with it's former stable mates that I will be handing down to him.

Dave, don't know what is going on for you either - I rarely ever cut a piece of paper, but I do skin and butcher deer. These two Buck's cleaned two deer this past Monday (12/21) - my hunting buddy was in awe of my knives - wanted to know how to sharpen his Buck 103 like that. Nothing to it with the Buck standard stainless (425M or 420HC) - several pulls on medium ceramic sticks and then several pulls on the fine ceramic - they'll take your hide off! Now the 440C with the old edge requires a different technique. OH

Oh, that steamboat sharpener is a fine piece of equipment! I got one last year and taught the boys to use it. As long as the blade has a bevel they'll do the trick. Best deal in the sharpening world at $20.

This Christmas my son son got this neat Buck fixed blade for me.
Yesterday, being the two is better than one kind of guy, I went to get another one.
No luck. Sold out. I did find these two other Bucks though. A Canoe for less than $18.00 and a #371 for under $20.00.
The fixed is made in USA. To me a neat smaller knife. The Canoe and Stockman are made in China which is not a big deal to me. They both are made really well and I like the amber jigged bone.

Harold what is the name and/or model number of that Buck fixed blade? I like the Nessmuk style blades and find that one very attractive. I'd like to see if I can find one for my pile.



I decided I wanted a Buck 3¼" medium two blade jack to go with my small collection of medium jacks but after some research, I discovered Buck didn't make one (that I could find). Soooo I bought a 303 Cadet and sent it to Bob P. (Elvis).
Bob removed the middle blade (sheepfoot), put bone handles on it (after the original handles gave him fits) and made my dream come true. Here it is. A Buck 303-M (for modified).
I didn't ask Bob but I'm fairly certain he used Culpepper bone. I do know it's amber.

Never mind Harold. I zoomed in on your knife and discovered it's an 877 Maverick. Did you change the handles on yours, because after a quick search, all I can find have black handles.

Edit: And never mind on that too. Found a couple on eBay with white handles and they are the ones Made in USA. The black handled knives are Pacific Rim made.

My son got it at the big box store as handled.
I really like it that's why I went back for more.
I was surprised that the "big blue box place" had those USA fixed blades for the holidays.
By the way my canoe and stockman are really good examples. Origin not withstanding.

You're all very kind. Was this knife a China or U.S. build? I ran into a couple of things on this one that make it clear it wasn't built in the traditional method (or even close) like the rest of the Chinese knives I've seen. Depending of where this one was made, I'd like to talk to someone else who has had one of these apart so we can compare notes.
