Singin I agree. Those are drop dead beautiful. A fine packin knife. If ya don't mind, what exactly was it that Orvet did to the knife?

Yes, I also would like to know what Dale did. I am fairly sure that Hibbard Spencer Bartlett is a pre-war Schrade Cutco. It is a very nice knife. ::tu::
And I would also like to add my accolades for that Great Eastern harness jack. Very nice, indeed!

I haven't gotten the main blade on the 85 quite up to paper cutting perfection...

My secret weapon is in the truck, and when I have some down time tomorrow I reckon I'll get 'er wicked sharp.

My newer ones all have noticeable play. Sitflyer on BF's Buck forum suggest the issue may be the smoother but softer brass bushing on the main pivot.

The Opinels lock takes any play out of the system when engaged. Ive treated them harder than my Bucks and just can't dent them. My heart is with Buck (and old Schrade) but dang, these Opinels are tough.

They are high maintance (must resist comparisons) and I wouldn't want to use for skinning game due to the plain wood.
Well Dave ya wore me down,on my way to Beans I stopped at Freeport knife and cutlery shop and got a #7 to put in my cooking kit for hunting we'll be having a big venison feed out in the woods for VeteransDay ::nod::

Gard, I'm sorry. Tell you what, ill make the same deal with you I made with a bud at church. If you can break it at work, I'll buy your next one. He works in the trades. I dared him to break it.

Screw driver in the joint will loosen it up. Vaseline daily for a few weeks.

Sorry Colonel, I just saw your post. Actually Dale had a replacement HSB main clip on hand that he fixed the broken one with. Talk about a lucky break huh? Even the tang stamps match. ::nod::

I'd like to take a moment to THANK all of those who have served and those currently serving our country. There is no greater contribution than that made by the young men and women who stand between us and our enemies. There is no greater sacrifice than that made by those who fall making that contribution.

THANK YOU! Happy Veterans Day! ::tu:: ::tu:: ::tu:: ::tu::

Does anyone know if there is any significant difference between the stainless utility knives that are stamped U.S.M.C. and the ones that are stamped U.S. Marines? Other than just a different stamp of course.

Charlie, nice picks/pics.

Jerry, my understanding is that the old demo knives were made by several different makers with Camillus being the most common. So some minor variations like with the TL-29 pattern. Also, I've seen pictures of demo knives with just about every possible DoD type of stamping one can imagine. In particular, I recall (could be addled) Navy, Army, US. Can't recall seeing Air Force (or any variations of that). I've read several discussion about their reputation for broken back springs. But I've never seen anything that suggests any difference tied to stamping. Only on age and manufacturer.

I wonder what I'll carry today.... Anybody? Anybody? Beuullller?

Thanks Dave. The one I have is stamped 'U.S. Marines' and has no maker stamp on it anywhere. It's been suggested that it's Kingston. I've thought, on and off, of picking up one that has the 'U.S.M.C.' stamp but can't seem to generate enough enthusiasm to pull the trigger. ::shrug::

Here are a couple I have laying around. I probably have a dozen of them from the '60s up. It is my understanding the there were several makers as Pinnah said. The U.S.M.C. of course was stamped for issue to the Marines, the Navy was stamped U.S. Navy, and the U.S. stamp was for issue to the U.S. Army. I imagine the U.S. stamp was issued universally when needed. I could be wrong here but that's what I think I know. :? ::shrug::
